When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Midsummer brings pleasantly warm days around 21–25°C, ideal for exploring Hobart’s historic waterfront, Salamanca Market, and the nearby MONA galleries. Coastal walks along the East Coast reveal turquoise waters and quiet beaches, while inland, the national parks offer cooler forest trails and opportunities for spotting native wildlife.

February

Warm days continue, 21–24°C, with clear skies and calm evenings. It’s a great time for hiking in Freycinet and Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Parks, cycling along scenic trails, or enjoying Tasmanian vineyards and local produce. Coastal drives are particularly rewarding as the light lingers into the evening.

March

Autumn begins, with milder temperatures of 19–23°C. Forests take on rich hues, making walks in the Tamar Valley or Mt Field National Park especially appealing. Wildlife is active, and the quieter trails and beaches provide space for reflection. Hobart and Launceston host cultural events and food festivals, adding vibrancy to the season.

April

Crisp mornings and comfortably warm afternoons, 17–21°C, make this one of the most inviting months. Gardens, parks, and coastal paths display autumn colours, while inland walks remain peaceful and wildlife is easier to spot. Markets, galleries, and cafés provide cosy indoor retreats if the weather turns cooler.

May

Cooler mornings and days around 13–17°C bring a quiet, contemplative pace. Forests and reserves are lush after early autumn rains, and trails in national parks are perfect for bushwalking or birdwatching. Coastal paths and beaches offer fresh, invigorating walks before winter sets in.

June

Winter arrives, with daytime highs around 11–14°C. Crisp, clear mornings make for dramatic coastal views and misty inland valleys. Wildlife is easier to observe in the low winter light, and indoor activities — galleries, museums, and cellar doors — offer comfortable ways to enjoy the region.

July

The coldest month, 10–13°C, with occasional rain and frosty mornings. Hiking trails and national parks remain accessible, and the serene landscape is ideal for those seeking quiet reflection. Evenings are best spent indulging in Tasmanian cuisine and regional wines indoors.

August

Days gradually warm to 12–16°C, with early hints of spring in sheltered gardens and reserves. Coastal walks and forest trails are comfortable in the mild sun, and wildlife begins to reappear more noticeably. Early mornings and late afternoons provide excellent conditions for photography and nature observation.

September

Spring arrives, 14–18°C, with blossoming gardens and increasing daylight. Coastal drives, vineyards, and national parks are especially appealing, while markets and cultural events start to gain momentum. Wildlife activity rises, and bushwalking or cycling can be comfortably enjoyed throughout the day.

October

Mild, 16–20°C, with generally dry conditions. Gardens, forests, and coastal paths are vibrant, making this an excellent month for exploring both inland and shoreline trails. Festivals, markets, and food experiences showcase seasonal produce, while mornings and evenings offer cooler respite for outdoor activities.

November

Warming further, 18–22°C, with longer days and mostly sunny skies. Beaches, coastal walks, and national parks are accessible and inviting, and vineyards are in full swing. Wildlife is active, and early mornings or late afternoons provide the most comfortable conditions for exploring or photography.

December

Early summer warmth returns, 20–24°C, with long sunny days. Coastal drives, walks along beaches, and national park trails are all inviting, while cultural events, markets, and vineyards provide indoor–outdoor experiences.
