January
High summer brings warm, sunny days, typically 28–32°C along the coast. Beaches are lively, and the Indian Ocean is perfect for swimming, surfing, or kayaking. Inland valleys and the Outeniqua Mountains offer cooler retreats, ideal for hiking and exploring Oudtshoorn’s Cango Caves. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for wildlife spotting and forest walks.
February
Similar temperatures to January, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms, mostly brief. Coastal towns are vibrant, with water sports and boat trips in full swing. Forest trails, nature reserves, and the lagoons around Knysna are enjoyable in the cooler morning hours, while evenings are suitable for alfresco dining and sunset cruises.
March
Late summer brings slightly cooler temperatures, around 25–29°C, with diminishing rainfall. The landscape remains lush, rivers full, and the coastline inviting. It’s a prime month for whale watching near Plettenberg Bay, exploring forest trails, and enjoying scenic drives along the coast without the peak crowds of mid-summer.
April
Autumn sets in, with highs around 22–26°C and more settled weather. Coastal walks and beach exploration are comfortable, and inland areas take on warm autumnal tones. Hiking, mountain biking, and visits to wildlife sanctuaries are ideal. It’s also a quieter time for exploring towns, markets, and cultural sites along the route.
May
Mild, with highs of 19–23°C. Rainfall is lower, and days are cooler, particularly in the evenings. It’s an excellent time for forest walks, lagoon cruises, and visiting wildlife reserves. Autumn colours enrich the scenery, making drives through Knysna forests and the Outeniqua Pass especially photogenic.
June

The region is quieter, offering peaceful hiking, birdwatching, and photography opportunities. Coastal towns are calm, and indoor attractions such as museums and craft markets provide engaging alternatives.
July
Cool and occasionally wet, with highs around 16–20°C. Early mornings can be foggy, adding atmosphere to forested areas and mountain passes. Whale watching continues along the southern coast, and game reserves remain rewarding for wildlife viewing. Evenings are ideal for fireside dinners and tasting local wines and cuisine.
August
Winter eases into spring, with warming days around 18–22°C and longer daylight hours. Wildflowers start appearing inland, and rivers and waterfalls are full from winter rains. Hiking, forest walks, and coastal exploration are increasingly pleasant, with fewer crowds and clear skies.
September
Spring is underway, highs of 20–25°C. Gardens, forests, and fynbos-covered slopes bloom vibrantly. Whale season peaks near Plettenberg Bay, and hiking trails, lagoons, and scenic passes offer excellent opportunities for outdoor activity. The region is lively yet not crowded, ideal for combining nature and cultural experiences.

November

December
