Koh Lanta

Located south of Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman coast, the island group of Koh Lanta is a paradise for beach lovers and divers. Most of the main attractions can be found on Koh Lanta Yai, a 25km-long island containing outstanding natural beauty and secluded havens to be discovered, as well the sublime luxury of world-class beach resorts.

Scuba divers will love exploring the sea caves, pinnacles, seamounts and coral reefs in the crystalline waters of Koh Lanta, whilst those looking for a more luxuriating experience can enjoy the numerous stunning beaches on the island.

With enough development to provide convenient amenities and activities and ample unspoilt space to enjoy blissful solitude even during peak tourist season, Koh Lanta makes a perfect beach holiday in Thailand for couples, families, backpackers and divers.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Dry season conditions make this one of the most comfortable months to visit. Days hover around 28–30°C with clear skies and calm seas. Long beaches such as Klong Dao and Long Beach are perfect for unhurried walks, while snorkelling trips to nearby islands run regularly under bright, settled weather.

February

Still warm and reliably sunny, with temperatures close to 30°C and gentle sea breezes. The water is typically clear and calm, making it an excellent time for diving excursions to nearby reefs and marine parks. Evenings are relaxed, with beachfront restaurants and small bars drawing people out for sunset.

March

The heat gradually intensifies, often reaching 31–33°C during the day. Conditions remain dry, though afternoons can feel noticeably warmer. Mornings are particularly pleasant for exploring fishing villages, cycling quiet coastal roads, or taking a long-tail boat to nearby islands.

April

One of the hottest points of the year, frequently 32–34°C. The sea remains inviting and swimming is often the easiest way to cool off. Thai New Year celebrations bring lively scenes to towns and beaches, with water-splashing festivities marking the season.

May

Humidity increases and the first hints of the monsoon appear. Showers become more common, usually arriving in short bursts that freshen the air. The island becomes quieter as some resorts close for the season, leaving a peaceful atmosphere along the beaches.

June

Rainfall grows more regular, though bright spells still break through. Temperatures remain around 29–31°C. The landscape becomes vividly green, and the island takes on a slower rhythm with fewer visitors and empty stretches of sand.

July

Warm and humid with passing showers and occasional rougher seas. Calm periods still allow for beach visits, while inland cafés and small markets offer places to linger when rain arrives. The quieter pace appeals to travellers looking for a more laid-back stay.

August

Conditions are similar to July, with alternating sunshine and tropical rain. Temperatures sit around 29–30°C. Coastal scenery feels especially lush, and the island’s forests and mangroves thrive during the wetter period.

September

Often the wettest month, bringing heavier rainfall and cloudier days. Seas can be choppy, limiting some boat excursions. Even so, the island remains strikingly green, and quiet roads and beaches give it an almost secluded feel.

October

The monsoon gradually begins to ease. Rain still falls, but clearer intervals appear more frequently. Resorts and restaurants slowly reopen as the island prepares for the return of the dry season.

November

Weather improves noticeably, with warmer sunshine returning and rainfall dropping away. Temperatures around 29–31°C make it comfortable for beach days, island-hopping trips and coastal walks as tourism begins to build again.

December

Dry season conditions settle in, bringing bright skies, warm temperatures around 28–30°C and calmer seas. The island feels lively again as travellers arrive for the festive period, with sunset views along the Andaman coast among the highlights of the season.
