When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

January is one of the best months to visit Koh Chang, with temperatures ranging between 25°C to 30°C. The dry season is in full swing, making it ideal for beach activities and exploring the island’s natural beauty. The Klong Plu Waterfall is particularly stunning at this time, as the waterfall flows freely, and the surrounding trails are perfect for a refreshing hike. The weather is generally sunny and pleasant, providing optimal conditions for enjoying the clear waters at White Sand Beach.

February

February continues to offer great weather for outdoor adventures, with temperatures hovering around 28°C during the day. This is an excellent time for water sports like snorkelling, diving, and kayaking, especially around the nearby Koh Rang National Marine Park. The calmer seas also make boat trips more enjoyable. The island remains peaceful, and you'll find fewer crowds than in other more popular Thai islands, providing a relaxing atmosphere.

March

In March, Koh Chang starts to warm up, with temperatures reaching the low 30s. It’s still a great time to visit, as the dry weather persists. The hot sun is perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the beach, particularly on Lonely Beach, which offers a more secluded experience. Take advantage of the sunny days to visit the Salak Phet Bay, where you can take a boat tour to explore the coastline and discover hidden coves.

April

April brings the peak of the hot season, with temperatures soaring up to around 33°C. Although it can be quite hot, the festivities of Songkran, Thailand’s New Year, make it an exciting time to visit. The local celebrations usually involve water fights and cultural events. If you prefer to escape the heat, the Bang Bao Bay offers a great mix of beach relaxation and fresh seafood dining. For some cooler air, explore the lush trails of Koh Chang National Park, where the forest canopy provides a refreshing shade.

May

May marks the beginning of the rainy season, but it’s still a fantastic time to visit if you don’t mind occasional showers. Temperatures linger around 30°C during the day, but the humidity increases. The rains bring the island’s lush foliage to life, making it a beautiful time to explore Klong Plu Waterfall again, which is even more dramatic with the added water flow. The crowds thin out, making it an excellent month for a peaceful getaway.

June

June sees more frequent rain showers, with temperatures around 28°C. The rainy season brings a lush and verdant landscape, perfect for nature lovers. The beaches are quieter, allowing for a more relaxed and private experience. If you're interested in wildlife, June is an excellent time for birdwatching or spotting tropical animals in the dense jungles of Koh Chang National Park. While some tours may be affected by the rain, it’s a great time to relax at a secluded beach hut or spa.

July

July continues the rainy season, with brief but intense afternoon showers. Temperatures are around 27°C to 30°C. Despite the rain, the island retains its charm, and it’s a good time to explore Koh Chang’s hiking trails, like the one that leads to the Klong Nonsi Waterfall, which is beautiful during this time of year. The rain also creates spectacular sunsets, so you can still enjoy a peaceful evening by the beach.

August

August is another rainy month, but the rainfall tends to be more sporadic, with cloudy skies and intermittent showers. Temperatures hover around 29°C. While some tourists shy away from Koh Chang during this time, the relatively uncrowded environment makes it an ideal time for solitude. You can enjoy some of the island’s best natural attractions, such as Koh Chang Waterfall, without the usual crowds. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, consider taking a guided jungle trek to spot exotic wildlife.

September

September is typically the wettest month on Koh Chang, with frequent rain showers and humidity levels on the rise. Daytime temperatures are around 27°C. Despite the weather, the lush environment is stunning, and it's a great month for eco-tourism activities, like visiting the Salak Khok Bay for a boat tour through its mangrove forests. The rain creates dramatic landscapes, making it a great time for photography. This is also an excellent period for spotting turtles and other marine life in the waters around the island.

October

October sees a continuation of the rainy season, but the end is in sight. The rainfall starts to ease by the end of the month, and temperatures remain around 28°C. While the weather is still somewhat unpredictable, it’s an excellent time to visit for those who want to avoid crowds. The peaceful vibe allows for quiet reflection or relaxation, especially if you’re staying in one of the more tranquil spots on the island, such as Ao Khlong Son. The occasional sunshine allows you to enjoy Koh Chang’s natural beauty, particularly the beaches and waterfalls.

November

By November, the rainy season is coming to an end, and the weather improves significantly. Temperatures range from 28°C to 30°C. The island begins to buzz again as more visitors arrive, but it’s still not as crowded as in the high season. The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, including hiking to Klong Plu Waterfall or snorkelling in the clear waters near Koh Rang. With the lush vegetation still intact from the rains, the island is in full bloom.

December

December is one of the best times to visit Koh Chang, with mild temperatures around 27°C to 30°C. The dry season is in full swing, and it’s perfect for outdoor activities like island hopping, exploring the national parks, or simply enjoying a relaxing day at the beach. If you’re into diving or snorkelling, Koh Rang is ideal for spotting colourful marine life. The festive season also brings local celebrations and events, giving you the opportunity to enjoy Koh Chang’s charm while taking part in traditional Thai activities.
