When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

A popular time to visit. The island basks in sunshine with clear skies and calm seas, ideal for snorkelling, boat trips, and lazy beach days. Haad Yuan and Bottle Beach are peaceful, while the Full Moon party at Haad Rin draws revellers. Temperatures stay around 28–30°C, with very little rain and cool breezes in the evenings.

February

Continues the dry season with plenty of sunshine and warm, settled weather. It’s a great month for hiking to viewpoints like Domesila or relaxing at wellness resorts in Sri Thanu. Coral reefs offer great visibility for diving. Highs reach around 31°C, and the humidity remains low, making it one of the most comfortable months for travellers.

March

Temperatures begin to climb, and the air grows a little more humid, but sunny skies still dominate. It’s a good time for water-based activities - kayak around the coast or take a boat trip to Ang Thong Marine Park. Sunset bars on the west coast become more popular as evenings remain warm and dry.

April

Hot and steamy, with temperatures often reaching up to 34°C. The Thai New Year, Songkran, is celebrated mid-month with joyous water fights — a welcome way to cool off. Some light showers may appear later in the month, offering brief relief. Shade, sea dips, and coconut shakes are essential this time of year.

May

The transition to the monsoon season begins. It’s still hot, but brief afternoon downpours become more common. The island is quieter, with fewer visitors, making it a good time for those seeking peace at yoga retreats or spa resorts. Lush greenery returns to the hillsides, and waterfalls like Phaeng and Than Sadet regain their flow.

June

A shoulder month. Occasional rain showers appear, especially in the evening, but there’s still plenty of sun between. The sea remains warm and generally calm. Fewer crowds mean more relaxed vibes in the villages and on the beaches. It’s a good time for nature lovers, with jungles in full bloom and trails less trodden.

July

Rainfall increases slightly, but it usually comes in short bursts, not all-day storms. The beaches are quieter, especially away from Haad Rin, and accommodation is more affordable. Expect warm, humid days around 31°C and refreshing swims in uncrowded coves. Sri Thanu remains a hub for detox retreats and meditation sessions.

August

Similar to July — humid, warm, and sporadically rainy. You’ll likely still get hours of sunshine daily. This is a great time for waterfall treks, and inland foliage is thick and vibrant. The atmosphere is laid-back, and local eateries and night markets feel more intimate than in peak season.

September

The wet season begins in earnest. Days often bring heavy but short-lived rain, especially in the afternoon or overnight. It’s not ideal for sunbathing, but a lovely time to unwind with yoga, Thai massages, and slow mornings overlooking the sea. Some roads, especially inland, may become muddy or slippery.

October

The rainiest month on the island. Expect frequent showers and overcast skies, though there are still dry, beautiful moments. Waterfalls are dramatic and full, and the jungle is thick and aromatic. Many businesses scale back their hours or close temporarily, and the island sees fewer visitors — ideal if you’re seeking solitude.

November

The monsoon starts to taper off. Early in the month, rain may linger, but by the end, the skies begin to clear. The landscape is lush and green, and streams and waterfalls still flow strongly. Visitors begin returning, and beach bars and diving operators reopen for the season.

December

One of the most desirable months to visit. The weather stabilises with lots of sunshine, calm seas, and average highs around 30°C. The festive season brings more travellers, but the atmosphere remains relaxed and tropical. From lively parties to peaceful sunrise yoga, Koh Phangan offers a bit of everything this time of year.
