When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

January is a tale of contrasts. Snow cloaks the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, making for magical hot air balloon rides over frosted valleys, while ski resorts like Uludağ and Palandöken are in peak season. Meanwhile, coastal areas such as Antalya and Izmir enjoy milder weather, ideal for uncrowded sightseeing.

February

February stays crisp inland and in the mountains, but there’s a serene beauty to winter in destinations like Safranbolu and Ankara. Along the Aegean coast, almond trees begin to bloom, hinting at spring’s arrival.

March

March marks a shift, especially in the west. Cities like Istanbul start to shake off the winter chill, and tulip beds begin appearing in parks. Cappadocia sees clearer skies, making it a strong pick for hiking and photography.

April

April brings colour and vibrancy. Istanbul’s Tulip Festival fills the city with blooms, and historic sites like Ephesus and Troy are far more pleasant to explore before the summer heat arrives. The Lycian coast also begins to stir.

May

May is one of the best times to visit. Warm but not stifling, with highs reaching the mid-20s in coastal areas, it’s perfect for combining beach time with visits to archaeological treasures, whether in Fethiye, Bodrum, or along the Aegean.

June

June sees Turkey sliding into summer. The beaches of Antalya, Alacati, and Marmaris draw growing crowds, and inland regions like Pamukkale benefit from extended daylight hours and manageable warmth.

July

July turns up the heat. Southern and western resorts are buzzing, with peak season in full swing. Expect temperatures in places like Bodrum and Fethiye to climb into the mid-to-high 30s. It’s a popular time for yachting, water sports, and long, warm nights.

August

August is Turkey’s hottest and busiest month. Coastal breezes help, but urban sightseeing in places like Istanbul or inland in Konya can be challenging in the daytime heat. Still, it’s prime time for enjoying the Turkish Riviera by boat or beach.

September

September brings relief. The crowds begin to thin, especially after the first week, but the sea remains warm and the air comfortable. It’s an excellent time to explore both natural and historical sights, from Göbekli Tepe in the southeast to the forests of the Black Sea region.

October

October is mellow and golden. Temperatures along the coast hover in the mid-20s, making it one of the most pleasant months for laid-back escapes. The harvest season in regions like Cappadocia and the Thrace vineyards adds a culinary edge to any trip.

November

November cools quickly in the interior but stays relatively mild in places like Izmir and Istanbul, though with a greater chance of rain. Fewer tourists mean quieter museums, mosques, and markets.

December

December is brisk and reflective. Snow blankets eastern Turkey and the mountain ranges, while major cities gear up for New Year festivities. It’s a quieter time to visit the country’s many UNESCO sites without summer’s distractions.
