When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

The new year begins with cooler days across Greece, while the southern islands enjoy a noticeably milder climate than the mainland. Ancient archaeological sites and historic quarters are wonderfully peaceful, making sightseeing particularly rewarding. Snow often dusts the mountains, creating a striking contrast with the sparkling coastline.

February

Winter continues, with daytime temperatures typically around 10–15°C in many coastal areas. Olive groves, quiet villages and uncrowded beaches offer a different perspective on the country away from the summer season. Migratory birds can often be spotted in wetlands and nature reserves.

March

Spring slowly takes hold as almond blossom and wildflowers brighten the countryside. By March, longer daylight hours encourage walking through ancient ruins, hillside villages and coastal trails. The islands begin preparing for the return of visitors as ferry services increase.

April

The landscape is at its greenest, with temperatures often reaching around 16–22°C. April is an excellent time for exploring famous archaeological sites such as Delphi or Olympia before the warmer months arrive. Clear skies and fresh spring colours create ideal conditions for photography.

May

Warm sunshine becomes more reliable, with daytime highs generally between 21–26°C. Beaches begin to fill, while mountain villages and island harbours retain a relaxed atmosphere. Wildflowers continue to colour the hillsides, particularly across Crete and the Peloponnese.

June

Long, sun-filled days bring ideal conditions for island hopping and coastal exploration. The Aegean and Ionian seas become increasingly inviting for swimming, sailing and snorkelling. June evenings are particularly enjoyable, with waterfront tavernas and harbour promenades coming alive after sunset.

July

Peak summer arrives, with temperatures frequently around 30–35°C. The islands buzz with activity, while higher-altitude villages provide a cooler escape from the midday heat. Crystal-clear waters and long hours of sunshine make this a favourite time for beach holidays.

August

Warm, dry weather continues, occasionally accompanied by refreshing Meltemi winds across parts of the Aegean. Coastal paths, hidden coves and traditional fishing villages remain rewarding to explore during the cooler morning and evening hours. Cultural festivals take place throughout the country, celebrating music, food and local traditions.

September

The sea remains wonderfully warm, while daytime temperatures ease to around 25–29°C. September combines comfortable sightseeing conditions with excellent beach weather, making it one of the most balanced months to visit. Vineyards and orchards also begin their harvest season across many regions.

October

Autumn arrives gradually, bringing temperatures generally between 20–25°C. Hillsides begin to change colour in northern Greece, while many islands continue to enjoy pleasantly warm afternoons. Historic towns and coastal walks become quieter as visitor numbers decline.

November

A calmer atmosphere settles across the country as cooler weather returns. Daytime temperatures often reach around 15–20°C, and occasional rainfall refreshes the countryside after the long, dry summer. Museums, monasteries and archaeological sites can be explored at a leisurely pace.

December

Festive celebrations bring a welcoming atmosphere to towns and cities as winter returns. December offers peaceful sightseeing, particularly around Athens and Thessaloniki, while mountain resorts begin their ski season. Coastal sunsets remain spectacular, especially on clear evenings overlooking the Aegean or Ionian seas.
