When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

January welcomes the cool season across Egypt, making it an ideal time for sightseeing. Daytime temperatures in Cairo hover around 19°C, perfect for exploring the pyramids or wandering the museums without the intense heat. In Luxor and Aswan, it's pleasantly mild, while the Red Sea resorts offer sunny skies for beach strolls and diving.

February

February continues the trend of comfortable travel weather. With lower crowds than peak December, it's a great time to enjoy Nile cruises or discover ancient sites like Abu Simbel. The crisp evenings are ideal for desert stargazing or sipping tea in Cairo’s historic Khan El Khalili bazaar.

March

March begins to warm up, especially in southern Egypt. Spring flowers appear in the oases, and the Mediterranean coast awakens from its winter hush. Alexandria becomes more inviting, with breezy days and calmer seas. It’s also a lovely time for hiking in Sinai’s mountains before the heat sets in.

April

April is warm but not overwhelming. Expect temperatures in Upper Egypt to reach into the high 20s, making early starts for temple visits in Luxor or Edfu a wise idea. The Sinai Peninsula blooms with desert wildflowers, and the Red Sea’s coral reefs are vibrant for snorkelling.

May

May signals the start of real heat inland, but the coasts remain manageable. With fewer crowds, this is a good time to relax in Hurghada or Marsa Alam, where sea breezes temper the warmth. Cultural festivals also begin appearing in urban centres like Cairo.

June

June can be scorching in Upper Egypt, but the Mediterranean coast - particularly Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh - offers respite with cooling breezes. Beachgoers head to the Red Sea, where underwater visibility is excellent and the resort towns are lively but not yet crowded.

July

July is hot across the country. Cairo often sees highs above 35°C, while Luxor and Aswan exceed 40°C. Tourism quietens inland, but beach resorts flourish. Divers and snorkelers make the most of the Red Sea’s warm, clear waters, and evenings bring vibrant nightlife to coastal towns.

August

August continues the heat, but many Egyptians take holidays, creating a buzzing summer atmosphere at beach destinations like Ain Sokhna and Sharm El Sheikh. Cultural sites are best visited at sunrise, with shaded cafés offering refuge in the afternoon.

September

September begins to cool slightly, especially on the coast. The Mediterranean becomes more comfortable again for swimming, and desert treks in areas like Siwa Oasis regain appeal. It’s also harvest season in the Nile Delta - a scenic time for rural exploration.

October

October is a sweet spot for travel. With average highs around 28-30°C in Cairo, it's warm without being oppressive. Historic sites are best enjoyed now, with smaller crowds and golden light making for stunning photography in places like Abu Simbel and Saqqara.

November

November is one of Egypt’s best months to visit. Comfortable weather returns across the country, ideal for desert adventures, Nile cruises, and city exploration. Luxor and Aswan thrive with visitors, and coastal towns remain sunny and serene.

December

December brings a festive, cooler air. With days in the low 20s, sightseeing is relaxed and enjoyable. Christmas and New Year’s attract holidaymakers to Red Sea resorts, while Cairo’s cafés and galleries come alive with winter events and exhibitions.
