When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter in France is crisp and often quiet, with temperatures ranging from 3–8°C in Paris and milder conditions along the Mediterranean. It’s a charming time to wander the cobbled streets of Strasbourg or Lyon, explore museums without crowds, or enjoy cosy cafés with a hot chocolate. The Alps offer skiing and snowy vistas for those seeking adventure.

February

Cold persists across northern and central regions, but the south enjoys more sunshine, with highs around 10–13°C along the Côte d’Azur. Carnival celebrations in Nice and other towns bring colour and energy, while city streets remain peaceful, ideal for gallery visits, historic tours, and early spring walks in parks and vineyards.

March

Spring begins to stir, with highs of 12–17°C. Cherry blossoms appear in gardens, and countryside walks along the Loire or Burgundy vineyards are invigorating. Coastal areas start to warm, making it an excellent time for exploring towns like Biarritz or Saint-Tropez before the summer crowds arrive.

April

Temperatures rise to 15–19°C, with mild sunshine and occasional showers. Parisian terraces fill with locals enjoying outdoor cafés, and gardens such as Versailles or Monet’s Giverny are at their best. The wine regions awaken, and walking or cycling tours in Provence or Alsace are particularly rewarding.

May

Late spring brings highs of 18–22°C and long daylight hours. Cities bustle with outdoor markets and street performances, while the countryside is lush and fragrant. Coastal towns along the Mediterranean and Atlantic begin to welcome beachgoers, and cultural events, such as music and art festivals, enliven towns and villages.

June

Early summer offers highs of 22–26°C. Beaches, vineyards, and national parks are at their most inviting, while towns host open-air concerts, markets, and festivals. River cruises, cycling routes, and walks through lavender fields or historic towns are perfect for enjoying the season.

July

Warm and lively, highs often reach 25–30°C. France’s cities and coasts are bustling with tourists, especially in Paris, the Riviera, and Brittany. Bastille Day celebrations light up towns, while outdoor cafes, coastal walks, and vineyard tours offer a taste of French summer living. Early mornings and late evenings are best for sightseeing before the midday heat.

August

Hot and vibrant, 26–30°C across much of the country. Coastal retreats, mountain escapes, and countryside villages provide cooler relief. Markets, festivals, and cultural events are at their peak, and late summer is ideal for exploring Provence, Normandy, or the Dordogne before autumn approaches.

September

Temperatures ease slightly, highs of 20–25°C, and the crowds thin. Vineyards are alive with harvest, and food and wine festivals are widespread. It’s a comfortable month for walking city streets, exploring castles and gardens, and enjoying late summer sun along both coasts.

October

Autumn arrives, highs of 14–19°C, with colourful foliage across forests, parks, and vineyards. Markets are full of seasonal produce, and towns and cities enjoy a quieter, more relaxed pace. Coastal areas remain pleasant for walks, while cultural attractions, from museums to theatres, offer rich experiences.

November

Days shorten and temperatures drop to 8–12°C in much of the country. Rain is more frequent in the north and west, making it a good month for indoor cultural activities, including museum tours, historic visits, and culinary experiences. Countryside walks reveal misty valleys and early signs of winter.

December

Winter returns, highs around 5–10°C in the north, milder in the south. Christmas markets fill towns with lights, crafts, and festive treats.
