When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

January sees Slovenia wrapped in winter’s hush. The Julian Alps are in full ski season, with Kranjska Gora and Vogel welcoming snow lovers. Meanwhile, Ljubljana’s baroque streets are quieter post-festivities, perfect for sipping hot chocolate by the Ljubljanica River as the city catches its breath.

February

February brings a festive twist with Kurentovanje, Slovenia’s most famous carnival, filling Ptuj with traditional masks, music, and parades. Snow still covers the mountains, but down in the capital and along the coast, days start to stretch a little longer.

March

March hints at renewal. Alpine areas may still see snow, but blossoms appear in the valleys, and rivers like the Soča begin to swell with meltwater. It’s a great time for peaceful hikes in the lowlands or exploring caves like Postojna before tourist season builds.

April

April is lush and awakening. Wildflowers brighten the countryside, and lakes such as Bled and Bohinj begin to shimmer under gentler sun. Temperatures in many regions begin to reach 15-17°C, inviting boat rides, lakeside walks, and vineyard visits in the Brda region.

May

May is one of Slovenia’s most scenic months. Everything feels alive - forests are dense with green, waterfalls thunder through gorges, and Ljubljana buzzes with outdoor cafés. The Karst region is especially pretty now, ideal for wine tasting and bike rides among blossoming cherry trees.

June

June brings longer days and warm weather to both the mountains and the coast. The Soča Valley becomes a playground for rafting and kayaking, while the Adriatic town of Piran is warm enough for swims. Alpine hikes are back in full swing, but trails are still blissfully uncrowded.

July

July sees Slovenia in full bloom. The highlands are cooler, making Lake Bohinj a tranquil summer retreat, while seaside towns hit their peak. Ljubljana's festivals spill into the streets, and days in the lowlands often climb into the high 20s - ideal for picnics, paddleboarding, and terrace dining.

August

August is summer at its height. Expect hot days in the capital and along the coast, with highs often reaching 30°C. It’s a lively month, from music festivals in Maribor to mountain escapes in Triglav National Park. Early mornings are best for hiking to beat the heat and the crowds.

September

September offers a gentler pace. Harvest season begins, especially in wine-growing regions like Vipava Valley, and autumn slowly creeps into the forests. Temperatures remain pleasant - around 22°C in many areas - and it’s a perfect time for scenic drives, outdoor dining, and cultural festivals.

October

October paints the country in gold and crimson. The trees around Lake Bled blaze with colour, and the hills of the Karst region are ideal for truffle hunting and wine tastings. Cooler air arrives, but the atmosphere is calm and romantic.

November

November feels like a soft retreat. Fog drapes over the rivers and vineyards, and cultural life shifts indoors. Cities host literary festivals and concerts, and mountain lodges become inviting bases for quiet forest walks or early snowfall in the hills.

December

December brings a festive glow. Christmas markets sparkle in Ljubljana and Maribor, with wooden stalls, roasted chestnuts, and twinkling lights. Snow often graces the mountains, and ski resorts open their slopes just in time for holiday cheer.
