When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Dry season conditions dominate the Mekong, with clear skies and warm, settled days. River levels are lower, revealing sandbanks and quieter tributaries that are ideal for boat journeys. Floating villages feel calm and well connected, with daily life unfolding at an unhurried pace along the water.

February

Hot, dry weather continues, with daytime temperatures typically around 30–33°C. Long stretches of river travel are rewarded with uninterrupted views of rice paddies and stilted homes. Early mornings are best for photography, when mist briefly lingers over the water before the heat builds.

March

Heat intensifies across the basin, and the landscape takes on a golden, sun-baked tone. By March, riverbanks become busier with fishing activity as communities adapt to lower water levels. Shade along canals and narrow waterways becomes especially valuable during the afternoon.

April

Temperatures often reach 32–35°C, making this one of the hottest periods along the Mekong. April is marked by vibrant cultural celebrations in many riverside towns, where festivals bring colour and energy to the heat. River cruises focus on early or late-day travel to avoid the strongest sun.

May

The first signs of seasonal change appear as humidity builds and cloud cover increases. Short, heavy showers begin to break the heat, refreshing the river landscape. Paddy fields start to turn vivid green as preparations for the wet season intensify.

June

The wet season arrives more firmly, transforming the Mekong into a powerful, fast-moving river system. Temperatures usually sit around 28–31°C, but frequent rainfall cools the air and deepens the surrounding greenery. June is particularly atmospheric, with dramatic skies and lush riverbanks.

July

Rainfall becomes more consistent, feeding the floodplains and expanding waterways. Travel along the river feels immersive, with submerged landscapes and floating vegetation shaping the scenery. Wildlife activity increases, especially birds moving between wetlands and rice fields.

August

High water levels dominate, and boat travel becomes the primary way to explore the region. Dense jungle and rice paddies appear almost luminous in their green intensity. Afternoon storms are common but often pass quickly, leaving fresh, reflective surfaces across the water.

September

The river reaches some of its highest levels, reshaping sandbars and wetlands across the basin. Temperatures remain steady, often around 27–30°C, with humid conditions throughout the day. September offers striking contrasts between stormy skies and bright, reflective floodwaters.

October

Rain begins to ease gradually, and river currents slow as waters start to recede. The landscape remains lush, but clearer skies return more frequently. Fishing activity increases as communities adjust to changing water levels.

November

Drier air returns, bringing calmer river conditions and more predictable travel routes. Daytime temperatures often sit around 26–29°C, making boat journeys and riverside exploration more comfortable. Early mornings are especially scenic, with soft light over wide stretches of water.

December

The dry season settles back in, restoring clarity and accessibility across the Mekong. December offers some of the best travel conditions, with peaceful waters, golden light, and lively riverside markets. Cooler evenings bring a gentle rhythm to life along the riverbanks.
