Phnom Penh

The vibrant capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh has emerged from its harrowing recent past to proudly present itself as a fascinating destination for any Southeast Asia holiday.

Educate yourself with a necessary visit to the The National Museum of Cambodia and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, marvel at the splendour of The Royal Palace and sip a café au lait riverside at Sisowath Quay, Phnom Penh will stir the mind and soul.

Affectionately regarded as the ‘Paris of the East’ during its French colonial days, Phnom Penh may retain the charms of its European-influenced days, but today moves to an unmistakably lively Cambodian tempo.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Dry, sunny, and reliably warm, January is ideal for city exploring. The Royal Palace and riverside promenade shine under clear skies. It’s a great month for sunset drinks on rooftop terraces or a Mekong cruise in the golden hour.

February

Still part of the dry season, February sees slightly warmer days but remains one of the best times to visit. The city buzzes with life, from art galleries to markets. Boat trips and tuk-tuk rides are comfortable, thanks to low humidity.

March

Temperatures begin to rise, and the air gets drier. Museum visits and shaded café stops become more appealing during the midday heat. Expect highs climbing to around 34°C, especially by late March - early starts are your friend.

April

The hottest month in Phnom Penh, often peaking above 35°C. While the heat can be intense, the city erupts in celebration during Khmer New Year (Choul Chnam Thmey), usually held mid-month. Prepare for joyful water fights and vibrant street festivities.

May

Rains begin to make an appearance, typically as short, heavy showers in the late afternoon. The air cools slightly, and the city starts to green up. It’s a quieter time for tourism, offering more elbow room at Phnom Penh’s key sites.

June

As the wet season gains momentum, lush vegetation takes hold. Mornings often remain dry, so you can still visit the Killing Fields or Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum before the afternoon storms roll in. Travel pace slows a little - ideal for immersive, unrushed experiences.

July

Rain becomes more regular, but rarely lasts all day. Cultural venues and markets are still lively, and the city’s riverside restaurants offer atmospheric shelter during downpours. With fewer tourists, it’s easier to explore without crowds.

August

Phnom Penh feels fresh and alive, with greenery lining the streets and dramatic skies overhead. Though daily rain is likely, it usually falls in bursts. It’s a good month for deeper cultural experiences - cooking classes, temple visits, or browsing at the National Museum.

September

Typically the wettest month. Rain can fall persistently, and some streets may flood briefly, but life continues as normal. If you're a fan of atmospheric photography and don’t mind carrying an umbrella, this is a rewarding off-peak time to visit.

October

Rains begin to ease. Temperatures hover in the low 30s and the city balances blue skies with occasional showers. The riverfront comes back to life, and walking tours or bike rides through quieter districts feel less taxing than earlier in the wet season.

November

Dry season returns, and with it comes one of Phnom Penh’s biggest celebrations - Bon Om Touk, the Cambodian Water Festival. Watch vibrant boat races on the Tonlé Sap River, accompanied by fireworks and riverside food stalls. It’s one of the most festive times of year.

December

With blue skies and comfortable warmth (often peaking around 30°C), December is perfect for seeing Phnom Penh at its best. Whether taking in Khmer architecture, sampling street food, or enjoying a relaxed sunset cruise, the capital offers a gentle blend of energy and ease.
