Eastern Cape, South Africa

South Africa’s unique position affords visitors with a multitude of options to suit all needs and requirements. The country’s subtropical region is ideal for supporting the exciting Big Five wildlife we all love and revere, and is also entirely malaria free. There are numerous private game reserves offering an array of accommodation from tented camps to lodges and each offers 2 game drives a day so you can witness the animals at first light and then again later in the day as afternoon turns to dusk. During the day relax by the pool, read-up on the local flora and fauna or just kick back with a good book and enjoy the serenity. From Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Waterberg and Pilanesberg there are plenty of options that combine with a lovely Garden Route or Cape Winelands holiday.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

High summer brings long, warm days, with highs of 28–32°C along the coast and slightly cooler inland. Beaches are lively, especially in Port Elizabeth and Jeffreys Bay, while rivers and lagoons are ideal for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. Inland game reserves such as Addo Elephant Park are excellent for morning and late-afternoon wildlife drives. Evenings are long and bright, perfect for sunset drives along the Wild Coast or outdoor dining in town.

February

Similar temperatures persist, with coastal humidity noticeable in some areas. Rainfall is occasional but brief, often refreshing the landscape. Surfing conditions peak in Jeffreys Bay, and hiking trails in the Amatola Mountains are inviting in the cooler early mornings. Cultural events and local markets in towns provide vibrant experiences alongside natural exploration.

March

Late summer brings highs of 26–30°C, with slightly drier conditions. The coastline remains inviting, while inland bush and forested areas begin to soften after the peak heat. Birdwatching and game drives in reserves are rewarding, and the lower crowds after the holiday period make scenic routes along the Wild Coast more peaceful. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean are particularly striking this month.

April

Autumn sets in, with highs around 23–27°C and cooler evenings. The landscape adopts warmer tones, with forests and grasslands displaying rich colours. It’s a good time for walking, cycling and exploring both coastal and inland areas. Game drives remain excellent, and the calmer seas make early-season boat trips or fishing excursions highly enjoyable.

May

Mild and settled, highs of 20–24°C. Coastal temperatures are comfortable for long beach walks, while inland areas feel crisp and invigorating. It’s an ideal time for cultural visits to historic towns such as Grahamstown or small village markets along the coast. Wildlife is still active, and rivers, dams, and lagoons support plentiful birdlife.

June

Winter arrives, bringing cooler days of 18–22°C along the coast and chillier mornings inland. Rain is intermittent, often enhancing the vivid colours of the landscape. Game viewing remains productive in reserves like Addo, as animals congregate around water sources. Early mornings are crisp but ideal for photography, while evenings are suited to fireside dining and exploring local cuisine.

July

One of the coolest months, highs around 17–21°C, with occasional coastal storms. Inland valleys can experience frosty mornings. It’s a quieter month for tourism, making it appealing for travellers seeking solitude or off-peak rates. Hiking, birdwatching, and whale watching along the southern Wild Coast provide rewarding experiences with fewer visitors.

August

Cool mornings gradually give way to warmer afternoons, highs of 18–22°C. It’s an excellent shoulder-season month for both safari and coastal exploration. Wildflowers begin to emerge inland, adding colour to the scenery. Coastal towns start to regain energy as domestic travellers prepare for the coming spring.

September

Spring begins, with highs around 21–25°C. The landscape turns vibrant green, wildflowers bloom, and rivers and waterfalls flow strongly. Whale season is underway along the southern coastline, while inland trails offer ideal hiking conditions. It’s a superb month for photography and outdoor activities, as wildlife and natural scenery are both abundant.

October

Mild and settled, highs of 23–27°C. Coastal waters are warm enough for swimming, while inland areas provide excellent walking and cycling conditions. Cultural events and local food festivals appear across towns, and game drives are productive with the landscape still lush from spring rains. Early mornings and evenings are especially pleasant for scenic drives and wildlife observation.

November

Warm and increasingly dry, highs of 25–29°C. The coastline is inviting for extended beach visits and water sports. Inland temperatures rise moderately, with game reserves offering clear conditions for wildlife photography. It’s a lively month for festivals, markets and coastal walks, combining cultural and natural experiences.

December

Summer is fully established, highs of 28–32°C along the coast and slightly lower inland. Holiday season brings energy to towns and beaches, while rivers, lagoons and reserves remain accessible for adventure and wildlife encounters. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean provide dramatic vistas, and evenings are ideal for dining outdoors or enjoying coastal events.
