When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

High summer brings long, hot days, typically 28–35°C. Vineyards are lush and green, and mountain backdrops are clear under wide blue skies. Early mornings suit cellar visits and walks, with leisurely lunches and shaded terraces best in the afternoon heat.

February

Still hot and dry, with similar temperatures. Harvest begins in some vineyards, bringing a sense of activity across estates. It’s an excellent time for food and wine experiences, with reliable sunshine and warm evenings ideal for outdoor dining.

March

Late summer remains warm at 25–30°C, but with slightly softer light. Grape harvest continues, and the pace feels lively yet less intense than peak summer. Conditions are favourable for hiking in the surrounding mountains and exploring historic town centres.

April

Early autumn sees temperatures ease to 20–26°C. Vineyards begin turning shades of gold and russet, creating striking scenery. It’s one of the most photogenic months, well suited to scenic drives, wine tastings and relaxed exploration.

May

Cooler and calmer, with highs around 17–22°C. Autumn colour deepens, and visitor numbers drop. Crisp mornings and clear afternoons provide comfortable conditions for walking trails and cultural visits, paired with hearty seasonal cuisine.

June

Winter arrives, bringing cooler days of 15–19°C and occasional rain. Mountain peaks may be dusted with snow. Firesides, red wines and slower-paced tastings define the mood, making it an appealing time for cosy estate stays and culinary breaks.

July

One of the coolest and wettest months, with similar temperatures. Rainfall sustains the vineyards ahead of the growing season. Between showers, fresh green landscapes emerge, and indoor tastings and spa experiences are especially enjoyable.

August

Winter continues, though wildflowers begin appearing in parts of the Western Cape. Highs remain around 16–20°C. It’s a quieter time for travel, offering value and an intimate feel at many estates.

September

Early spring brings milder air, 18–23°C, and blossoming orchards. The countryside feels renewed, and hiking and cycling conditions improve. It’s a pleasant shoulder-season month with increasing sunshine.

October

Warmer and increasingly settled, 20–25°C. Vineyards are vivid green, and outdoor dining becomes more frequent. Clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures make this an excellent time for combining wine touring with light adventure.

November

Late spring delivers highs of 24–28°C. Days are long and bright, yet without the intensity of midsummer. It’s ideal for al fresco lunches, garden visits and exploring multiple estates at an unhurried pace.

December

Summer returns in full, with highs of 27–33°C. The atmosphere becomes lively as the holiday season approaches. Sun-drenched vineyards, evening events and festive dining create a celebratory feel across the Winelands.
