When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter settles over the canyons, bringing crisp, clear days and frost-tipped cliffs. January mornings are perfect for photography, capturing the contrast between deep shadows and sunlit rock formations. Trails are quiet, offering solitude while exploring mesas, arches, and slot canyons.

February

Cold air persists, though days gradually warm, often reaching around 6–10°C. Wildlife such as desert bighorn sheep can be spotted along canyon edges, and the low sun enhances the red rock colours. Afternoon hikes are more comfortable when the sun climbs higher in the sky.

March

Temperatures rise slightly, typically around 10–15°C, making it a favourable time for walking and photography. Early wildflowers begin to bloom along canyon floors and sandy plains. The interplay of shadows and sunlight highlights the intricate rock formations.

April

Spring brings pleasant warmth, with highs often around 16–20°C. Trails become more inviting, and longer daylight allows for extended exploration of overlooks and slot canyons. April mornings are particularly serene for capturing reflections in calm desert pools.

May

The dry, sunny conditions continue, with temperatures generally between 20–25°C. Desert landscapes are alive with subtle greenery, and morning hikes are ideal before the midday heat intensifies. Cultural and historical sites, including ancient petroglyphs, are especially accessible this month.

June

Summer heat arrives, with some days reaching 27–30°C, especially on lower canyon floors. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times for hiking or photography, while midday is better spent in shaded areas or exploring higher plateaus.

July

High temperatures persist, often around 30°C, combined with occasional summer thunderstorms. The monsoon rains briefly refresh desert vegetation, adding contrast to the red rock scenery. Trails can be slippery after storms, so early exploration is recommended.

August

Heat continues, though cloud cover and sporadic rainfall provide relief. August mornings are ideal for canyon rim walks or photography, capturing dramatic lighting on cliffs and spires. Wildlife activity is most noticeable near water sources and shaded areas.

September

Temperatures begin to moderate, generally around 25–28°C, creating comfortable conditions for hiking and photography. Autumn light casts long shadows across mesas and buttes, highlighting the desert’s textures. Migratory birds pass through the region, adding movement to the arid landscape.

October

Cooling continues, with highs around 18–23°C, making days ideal for extended hikes and guided tours. October offers clear skies and calm conditions for photography of canyon formations and river valleys. Early mornings often feature crisp, golden light over the vast desert expanses.

November

Winter approaches, bringing cooler air and occasional frosts along higher elevations. Daytime temperatures often reach 10–15°C, suitable for shorter hikes and scenic drives. The canyons’ colours appear especially vivid under soft autumn sunlight.

December

Chilly mornings and crisp air dominate, while afternoons are bright and clear. December is excellent for quiet exploration, with fewer visitors and dramatic low sun angles for photography. Snow is rare but can dust the higher plateaus, creating striking contrasts against the red rocks.
