When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Snow blankets Alberta's mountains, forests and prairies, creating spectacular winter scenery from the Canadian Rockies to the wide-open plains. Frozen lakes, ice-covered waterfalls and snow-dusted pine forests provide excellent opportunities for photography. Wildlife can still be spotted, particularly elk and bighorn sheep in lower valleys.

February

Winter remains firmly in place, with daytime temperatures typically around -8 to -1°C, although mountain regions are often colder. Ski resorts are at their peak, while frozen canyons and scenic drives reveal dramatic snow-covered landscapes. Clear, crisp nights can also offer excellent chances to witness the Northern Lights.

March

Longer days hint at the changing season as sunshine becomes more noticeable across the province. By March, lower-elevation trails begin emerging from beneath the snow, while waterfalls swell with the first signs of thaw. Wildlife becomes increasingly active as spring approaches.

April

The landscape begins to transform, with temperatures often reaching around 7–14°C. April brings fresh greenery to the foothills, while snow continues to cap the highest peaks of the Rockies. Rivers run fast with snowmelt, adding energy to mountain valleys and canyons.

May

Spring is well established, with daytime highs generally between 13–19°C. Wildflowers brighten alpine meadows, and hiking trails steadily reopen throughout the national parks. Bears emerge from hibernation, while migratory birds return to lakes and wetlands across the province.

June

Long daylight hours make this an excellent time to explore Alberta's diverse landscapes. Turquoise glacial lakes begin revealing their distinctive colour, while mountain trails and scenic parkways become fully accessible. June also offers outstanding conditions for wildlife watching and outdoor adventures.

July

Warm summer weather arrives, with temperatures frequently around 22–27°C. Canoeing, hiking and scenic drives through Banff and Jasper are especially rewarding beneath clear blue skies. Wildflower-covered meadows and glacier-fed lakes create some of the province's most iconic scenery.

August

Sunny days continue, making it ideal for exploring mountain trails, prairies and badlands. Alpine lakes remain crystal clear, while wildlife is often seen grazing during the cooler morning and evening hours. Festivals and rodeos celebrate Alberta's western heritage throughout the month.

September

Crisp mornings return as temperatures ease to around 15–20°C. September transforms the mountain landscapes with golden larch trees and colourful forests, creating exceptional photography opportunities. Hiking conditions remain excellent, with fewer visitors on many trails.

October

Autumn settles across the province, with temperatures generally between 8–13°C. Wildlife becomes increasingly active ahead of winter, while fresh snow may begin appearing on higher mountain peaks. Scenic drives combine colourful valleys with dramatic alpine backdrops.

November

The first sustained snowfall spreads across much of Alberta, returning the province to a distinctly wintry landscape. Daytime temperatures often sit around -2 to 5°C, and shorter days bring a peaceful atmosphere to forests, lakes and mountain towns. Winter recreation begins to gather pace once again.

December

Snow-covered peaks, frozen lakes and festive mountain communities define the close of the year. December is a magical time to experience Alberta, with ski resorts in full swing and national parks taking on a peaceful winter character. Clear evenings often provide outstanding stargazing beneath some of Canada's darkest skies.
