Mexico City

Mexico City may be one of the most heavily populated cities in the world, but it is packed with fascinating attractions to make it a recommended stop on any North American itinerary. With the fusion of cultures evident in its diverse neighbourhoods and architecture, Mexico City is home to Spanish-influenced churches as well as traditional Aztec temples. The city’s artistic heritage is in evidence at various galleries, including the excellent Frida Kahlo Museum. Meanwhile, the local markets are the place to pick up bargain local handicrafts and textiles, where the country’s penchant for devils and skeletons will be on display. With impressive open squares throughout the city and the deliciously moreish local cuisine to be found on every corner, Mexico City is a joy which is waiting to be discovered. We recommend combining a visit here with a stay in La Paz on the Baja California Sur.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Cool, crisp mornings give way to bright, sunny afternoons. The holiday lights linger into the first week, and the city feels both festive and refreshingly calm. Air quality can fluctuate, but parks like Chapultepec and rooftop cafés offer a breath of fresh air. Layers are essential - mornings can dip close to 7-9°C, while afternoons warm to around 21°C.

February

Still part of the dry season, February offers clear skies and mild weather. Street life begins to bustle again after the holidays. Museums, art galleries, and markets are pleasantly uncrowded. It’s a great time to explore Frida Kahlo’s Coyoacán or walk the leafy neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa without the summer heat.

March

Temperatures start to rise slightly, with plenty of sun and low humidity. Jacaranda trees bloom across the city in clouds of purple, creating stunning scenes in parks and along avenues. Cultural events pick up, including the annual Festival de México in the Historic Centre. It's one of the most beautiful months to explore on foot.

April

Warm, dry, and full of colour. Jacarandas linger early in the month, and Semana Santa (Holy Week) brings both celebrations and temporary calm as many locals head out of town. The city feels more spacious, and museums and landmarks are less crowded. Expect highs around 25-27°C in the afternoons.

May

The heat builds, especially by mid-afternoon, and signs of the rainy season begin to show. Mornings remain sunny, with late-day thunderstorms offering dramatic skies and a cooling finish. It’s a lively month, with street festivals and art fairs throughout. Ice cream stands and shady plazas become popular resting points.

June

Rainy season arrives, though not all-day downpours - storms tend to strike in the evening, leaving mornings fresh and clear. Lush greenery returns to city parks, and temperatures remain pleasant, with highs averaging 23-25°C. Indoor attractions like the National Museum of Anthropology are ideal if caught in a downpour.

July

A continuation of the rainy season, with dramatic evening showers and sunny spells in between. The city is alive with colour and energy, especially in local markets and cultural centres. Warm, wet evenings are perfect for a late-night taco run or a mezcal tasting indoors. Don’t forget an umbrella - you’ll likely need it daily.

August

Still wet, but vibrant. The city's cultural calendar keeps moving, and the late summer pace is leisurely yet full of life. Streets glisten after afternoon rains, and cooler evenings invite you to linger over long dinners or wander colonial neighbourhoods like San Ángel. The air feels heavy but not oppressive.

September

Independence Day on the 16th brings out a wave of national pride. Green, white, and red lights decorate city streets, and mariachi bands echo through plazas. Rain still falls regularly, but celebrations carry on. It’s an atmospheric time, with festivals, fireworks, and warm hospitality everywhere you turn.

October

Rain tapers off, and cooler, drier air returns. Preparations begin for Día de los Muertos, with markets selling marigolds, sugar skulls, and papel picado. The city becomes a stage for art, tradition, and remembrance. By month’s end, altars appear across homes and public spaces, and the mood is both reflective and joyful.

November

One of the best times to visit. Skies are clear, the rains have faded, and the weather is ideal for walking, with daytime highs around 22-23°C. Día de los Muertos celebrations continue early in the month, culminating in parades and candlelit cemetery vigils. It’s a culturally rich and visually stunning moment in the city’s calendar.

December

Festive lights, posadas, and piñatas mark the countdown to Christmas. Street vendors sell tamales and hot atole, and nativity scenes appear throughout public squares. The air is cool and dry, especially in the evenings, when temperatures can drop to 6-8°C. It’s a magical time - nostalgic, bustling, and full of warmth despite the chill.
