When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter is in full swing, and the capital is cloaked in cool, misty mornings. With average daytime highs around 20°C, it’s ideal for sightseeing at Humayun’s Tomb, India Gate, or the Red Fort without the searing heat. Lohri, a Punjabi harvest festival, adds warmth mid-month with bonfires and festive cheer.

February

A pleasant continuation of winter. Parks like Lodhi Gardens and the Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan are awash with blooms - perfect for leisurely strolls. The Delhi Literature Festival often takes place around this time, adding cultural buzz to the mild air.

March

Spring arrives briefly before summer sets in. The Holi festival lights up the city in March, filling the streets with colourful powder, music, and joy. Days start to feel warm, especially towards the end of the month.

April

Temperatures begin to climb and can peak around the mid-30s. It’s a good time to explore early in the day and retreat to Delhi’s museums, cafes, or malls during peak heat. The blooming of amaltas (Indian laburnum) trees paints the city with bright yellow blossoms.

May

Delhi turns hot and dry - often reaching 40°C or more. Locals lean into summer rhythms with cool drinks like jaljeera or lassi, while visitors should plan early starts to beat the heat. Mangoes arrive in markets, marking the beginning of India’s favourite fruit season.

June

Still intensely hot, but by late June, the monsoon teases its arrival with occasional dust storms and scattered showers. The scent of rain on dry earth (petrichor) is particularly evocative in the city’s old quarters.

July

The monsoon sweeps in, bringing relief from the heat and drenching the city in dramatic downpours. Humidity is high, but the lushness that returns to parks and gardens is a welcome contrast to the dry months before. Expect sudden showers - carrying an umbrella is wise.

August

Monsoon continues, though rains begin to taper off later in the month. Independence Day on August 15th is a major national event, with a grand flag-hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort and patriotic displays across the capital.

September

Still warm and humid, but with clearer skies as the monsoon retreats. Late September is marked by the beginning of festival season - Dussehra and Navratri preparations start, and there's an undercurrent of anticipation throughout Delhi’s neighbourhoods.

October

Arguably one of the best times to visit. With temperatures easing to the low 30s and less humidity, it’s perfect for sightseeing, evening markets, and enjoying outdoor events. Diwali - the festival of lights - occasionally falls in October, transforming the city with fireworks and shimmering décor.

November

Clear skies, mild days, and festive spirit make this another ideal month. Diwali often continues into early November if it hasn’t already occurred. Later in the month, the International Trade Fair attracts global visitors. Pollution can spike post-Diwali, so some caution is advised.

December

Winter returns with a chill in the air, especially in the mornings and evenings. Daytime highs hover around 22°C. Delhi dresses up for Christmas and New Year’s with markets, lights, and winter menus at rooftop cafes and heritage hotels.
