When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Snow settles across the Julian Alps, creating postcard-like scenes around both lakes. Lake Bled’s island church and castle appear especially atmospheric beneath frosty skies, while the quieter shores of Bohinj feel calm and untouched. Winter walking trails and nearby ski areas become the focus during the colder weeks.

February

Cold conditions continue, with daytime temperatures typically around 0–5°C. Morning mist occasionally drifts across the lakes, softening the mountain scenery and creating excellent photography conditions. Cosy alpine villages and lakeside cafés provide warmth after outdoor exploration.

March

Hints of spring begin to appear as snow retreats from lower ground and woodland paths reopen. By March, waterfalls around Lake Bohinj become more powerful with snowmelt from the surrounding peaks. Clearer afternoons reveal striking reflections across both lakes.

April

Fresh greenery spreads across the valleys, and temperatures often reach around 10–15°C. April is ideal for walking lakeside trails or exploring the nearby Triglav National Park before the summer crowds arrive. Wildflowers begin to brighten meadows and forest edges.

May

The landscape becomes increasingly vibrant, with longer daylight hours and comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. Daytime highs usually sit between 15–20°C, making it a rewarding time for hiking, cycling, and boat trips on Lake Bled. Waterfalls and rivers remain full from the spring thaw.

June

Early summer warmth settles into the region, bringing calm mornings and lush alpine scenery. Swimming areas around Lake Bohinj start to become popular, while forest trails remain cool and shaded. June evenings often provide soft golden light across the mountains and lakes.

July

Warm summer weather dominates, with temperatures frequently around 23–27°C. The lakes are at their liveliest, attracting visitors for paddleboarding, swimming, and scenic boat rides. Alpine trails higher in the mountains offer cooler conditions and expansive views.

August

Long, sunny days continue, and the surrounding forests provide welcome shade during warmer afternoons. Clear water and stable weather create excellent conditions for kayaking and photography. Occasional thunderstorms can roll through the valleys, briefly refreshing the air.

September

A quieter atmosphere returns as temperatures ease to around 18–22°C. September colours begin appearing in the forests, adding gold and amber tones to the lakeside scenery. Walking trails feel especially peaceful at this time of year.

October

Autumn deepens across the Julian Alps, with crisp mornings and colourful woodland landscapes. Temperatures generally range between 10–15°C, making longer hikes comfortable and scenic. Mist rising from the lakes often creates dramatic early-day views.

November

The region grows quieter as colder air settles over the valleys and mountain slopes. Daytime conditions are often around 5–9°C, and occasional rain or early snow returns to higher elevations. Lakeside towns take on a calm, reflective atmosphere.

December

Winter gradually returns, bringing festive lights, frosty mornings, and snow-dusted alpine scenery. December is especially atmospheric around Lake Bled’s shoreline and castle, where seasonal markets and illuminated streets add warmth to the cold evenings. Quiet trails around Bohinj offer peaceful views across the mountains and frozen meadows.
