When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

The year begins warm and humid, with daytime peaks around 32°C. While the rainy season is tapering off, short tropical showers still sweep through. Chinese New Year preparations light up the city’s temples and shopping streets toward the end of the month - don’t miss the lantern displays at Thean Hou Temple.

February

Festive energy peaks with Chinese New Year celebrations, complete with lion dances and fireworks. The weather is hot, but drier than the previous months, making it a good time for sightseeing - from the Petronas Towers to Batu Caves. The Thaipusam procession, a major Hindu event, also takes place, attracting thousands to the sacred steps of Batu Caves.

March

The dry spell continues, with less rainfall and warm days. Humidity can still feel intense, so morning and evening explorations are ideal. KL’s green lungs - like the Perdana Botanical Gardens - provide respite. It’s a great time for rooftop bars and outdoor night markets.

April

Temperatures remain steady, and humidity builds. Expect brief afternoon downpours, but they’re often refreshing. The city prepares for Ramadan, and bustling evening bazaars pop up across neighbourhoods like Kampung Baru, offering traditional Malay dishes for iftar.

May

Hot and humid, with increased rainfall toward the end of the month. The city buzzes with pre-Hari Raya (Eid) shopping and decoration. Expect vibrant lights at night and joyful gatherings once the fasting month ends. It’s a time of celebration and hospitality.

June

Rainfall tapers, and the city feels greener post-Ramadan. With schools out, local attractions like Aquaria KLCC, KL Tower, and Sunway Lagoon are lively with families. This is a good month to explore KL’s modern museums or venture slightly out to the Batu Caves early in the day.

July

Typically one of the drier months, though heat remains consistent. Cultural festivals like George Town Festival (in nearby Penang) are easily accessed via a short flight or train, while KL itself is alive with weekend markets and art shows. Outdoor cafes and rooftop dining are more appealing now.

August

Independence Day (Merdeka) brings patriotic energy, especially around Dataran Merdeka with its parades and performances. Weather-wise, it’s hot but manageable, and the city’s landmarks are dressed in flags. Look out for cultural showcases and local pride at every turn.

September

Showers pick up again, but they’re often short-lived and bring welcome relief from the midday heat. With school holidays over, it’s a quieter time to enjoy major attractions without the crowds. This is also a good time to enjoy KL’s lush parks and skywalks, such as the KL Forest Eco Park.

October

Monsoon season begins creeping back. Rain can be more frequent, especially in the afternoons. Deepavali (Diwali) brings brilliant lights and decorations to Little India in Brickfields. Visit in the evenings to soak up the festive mood and sample sweet Indian treats.

November

Rainfall intensifies, though mornings are often clear. Cultural events continue with year-end school performances and exhibitions. It’s a good time to explore KL’s sprawling shopping centres like Pavilion and Suria KLCC - ideal for staying dry while indulging in retail therapy.

December

Tropical downpours are common but usually predictable. Mornings tend to be dry, while heavy rain falls in the late afternoon. Christmas decor fills malls and major streets, particularly Bukit Bintang, and seasonal sales offer shopping bargains. Daytime highs still hover near 31-32°C, so light clothing and an umbrella are essentials.
