When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Hot, dry and one of the best safari months. Daytime temperatures in wildlife areas typically range from 25–30°C. Vegetation is thinner, improving game viewing, and coastal conditions are sunny with warm seas. Clear skies often frame Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli.

February

Similar to January: dry, bright and excellent for wildlife spotting. Water sources shrink, drawing animals into open areas. The coast remains warm and humid, well suited to beach stays and snorkelling.

March

Early March can still be dry, but the long rains often begin later in the month. Humidity rises, and landscapes turn greener. Wildlife remains present, though some lodges may close if heavier rains arrive.

April

Peak of the long rainy season. Expect afternoon downpours and occasional muddy tracks in national parks. Scenery is lush and dramatic, birdlife is abundant, and rates are typically lower — though wildlife viewing can be more challenging.

May

Rain continues, though it may ease towards the end of the month. Parks are quieter, and photography benefits from vivid green backdrops and brooding skies. Coastal areas are warm but may see heavy showers.

June

The rains subside and conditions improve steadily. Temperatures are slightly cooler, around 22–27°C in many safari regions. Vegetation begins to thin, and wildlife viewing improves. It’s a transitional but increasingly reliable month.

July

Cooler mornings and dry conditions mark the start of peak safari season. Highs average 20–26°C inland. The Great Migration typically begins to reach the Maasai Mara from Tanzania’s Serengeti, drawing travellers keen to witness river crossings.

August

One of the strongest months for wildlife. Dry plains and shorter grass improve visibility, and migration herds are often present in the Maasai Mara. The coast remains sunny with cooling breezes.

September

Dry and clear, with temperatures gradually rising. Wildlife concentrations remain high, and visitor numbers begin to ease slightly compared to August. It’s a well-balanced month for combining safari and beach.

October

Generally warm and mostly dry, though short rains may begin late in the month. Landscapes are still relatively open, offering good game viewing, and coastal waters remain calm.

November

Short rains arrive, usually in brief, heavy bursts rather than prolonged downpours. Scenery freshens quickly, birdlife increases, and parks are quieter. It can be a rewarding time for photography and value-focused travel.

December

Early December may still see showers, but drier, sunnier conditions often return later in the month. Wildlife viewing improves as vegetation settles, and the coast becomes busier over the festive period, with warm seas and tropical conditions.
