When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Indonesia is firmly within its wet season, with tropical showers refreshing rainforests, rice terraces and volcanic landscapes. Despite the rain, there are still plenty of bright intervals, particularly in the mornings, making island exploration rewarding. Lush scenery and dramatic cloud formations create excellent photography opportunities.

February

Warm, humid conditions continue, with daytime temperatures typically around 28–31°C across much of the archipelago. Waterfalls are at their most impressive, while dense jungle appears rich and vibrant after frequent rainfall. Marine life remains active, making snorkelling and diving rewarding when the seas are calm.

March

Rainfall gradually begins to ease in many regions, although tropical downpours are still possible. By March, beaches become sunnier, and walking trails through volcanic landscapes are increasingly accessible. The countryside remains beautifully green following the wetter months.

April

The transition towards the dry season brings longer spells of sunshine, with temperatures often around 29–32°C. April is an excellent time for visiting temples, exploring national parks or enjoying island-hopping adventures before peak season begins. Coastal waters become calmer, improving conditions for diving and boat trips.

May

Settled weather becomes more widespread, with daytime highs generally between 29–31°C. Rice terraces are especially vibrant, while forests and wildlife reserves remain full of life. Longer, drier days are ideal for hiking volcanic trails and exploring traditional villages.

June

Dry season conditions become well established across much of Indonesia. Warm sunshine and lower humidity make beaches, coral reefs and rainforest walks particularly enjoyable. June also offers excellent visibility for diving in destinations such as Raja Ampat and Komodo National Park.

July

One of the driest months of the year brings temperatures frequently around 30°C. Island landscapes appear at their clearest, with spectacular views from volcanic peaks and coastal cliffs. Festivals and cultural performances add extra colour to towns and villages throughout the archipelago.

August

Dry, sunny weather continues, accompanied by refreshing breezes in many coastal areas. National parks provide rewarding wildlife encounters, from orangutans in Borneo to Komodo dragons in eastern Indonesia. Calm seas are ideal for sailing, kayaking and exploring remote islands.

September

Warm days continue, with temperatures often around 29–31°C, while the sea remains inviting for swimming and snorkelling. September combines excellent weather with slightly quieter attractions following the busiest holiday period. Golden afternoon light makes beaches and volcanic landscapes particularly photogenic.

October

The first signs of the changing season begin to appear, although much of the country still enjoys long, sunny days. Temperatures generally range between 29–32°C, and rainforest vegetation remains lush after the extended dry spell. Boat trips through mangroves and island chains are especially rewarding.

November

Humidity gradually increases as the wet season approaches once again. Afternoon showers become more frequent, refreshing forests and rice fields across many islands. Wildlife remains active, while cultural attractions can often be enjoyed without large crowds.

December

The tropical rains return to many parts of Indonesia, bringing vivid green landscapes and full rivers. December offers a different perspective on the archipelago, with quieter beaches, dramatic sunsets and thriving rainforest scenery. Warm temperatures and a relaxed atmosphere continue to make island escapes enjoyable despite the more changeable weather.
