When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Cool and dry, January offers ideal weather for exploring Hong Kong’s outdoor spaces like Victoria Peak and the Dragon’s Back trail. With crisp air and average highs around 18°C, it’s perfect for city walks and harbour cruises without the humidity.

February

Lunar New Year celebrations light up the city, with vibrant parades, temple fairs, and flower markets. Fireworks over Victoria Harbour are a highlight if you time your visit well. It’s still relatively cool, but blossoms and festive energy brighten the atmosphere.

March

Warming up with occasional mist, March is a transitional month. Parks begin to bloom, and hiking trails are lush with greenery. Events like the Hong Kong Arts Festival make this a great time for culture lovers. Occasional light rains arrive, but most days remain comfortable.

April

April strikes a sweet balance - sunny, warm, and not yet too humid. Expect highs in the mid-20s. Beaches like Repulse Bay and outlying islands such as Cheung Chau beckon for relaxed day trips. Easter also brings a slight uptick in visitors.

May

The heat and humidity begin to rise, but it’s still manageable. With highs often nudging 30°C, this is a great time for rooftop bars, temple hopping (like at Wong Tai Sin), and dim sum feasts in air-conditioned dining halls. Dragon Boat Festival preparations start building momentum.

June

Rainy season begins. Expect short but heavy downpours, especially in the afternoons. That said, nature is at its lushest, and Dragon Boat Festival, usually held in June, brings energetic races and vibrant traditions to the waterfronts.

July

Hot, humid, and very much summer - with highs often in the low to mid-30s and frequent showers. Cool off in shopping malls, galleries, or take a ferry to breezy Lamma Island. Hong Kong’s vibrant night scene truly comes alive once the sun sets.

August

Similar to July, with sweltering heat and high humidity. Typhoons are possible, so it's wise to monitor forecasts. It’s still a lively time with plenty of indoor entertainment, from exhibitions at M+ museum to gourmet food tours across Kowloon.

September

The weather begins to calm slightly, but it's still warm. Mid-Autumn Festival brings glowing lantern displays, mooncakes, and fire dragon dances - particularly in Tai Hang. It's a magical time to experience tradition under the lights of the city skyline.

October

Arguably the best month to visit. With highs in the upper 20s and less rain, October is ideal for outdoor adventures and harbourfront strolls. Events like the Wine & Dine Festival and art exhibitions make this a favourite for culture and cuisine.

November

Clear skies, pleasant temperatures, and thinner crowds - November is calm and comfortable. It's a wonderful time for exploring neighbourhoods like Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, or taking the tram up to Victoria Peak for panoramic views.

December

Mild and festive. Daytime highs sit around 20°C, and while not cold by global standards, locals embrace winter coats and Christmas lights. Shopping centres dazzle with displays, and seasonal events at Disneyland and Ocean Park attract families and visitors alike.
