When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter wraps Shanghai in a brisk chill. While snow is rare, icy winds sweep through the Bund and across People’s Square. It’s a quieter time for sightseeing, and indoor attractions like the Shanghai Museum and art galleries offer a warm retreat. Hot dumplings and street-side skewers feel especially satisfying.

February

Still cold, but anticipation builds for Chinese New Year, typically falling this month. The city glows with red lanterns, fireworks light up the sky, and temples like Longhua bustle with activity. It’s a joyful time to witness local traditions - just be prepared for closures around the holidays.

March

March brings the first hints of spring, with temperatures gradually rising to around 15°C. Blossoms begin to appear in parks like Gucun Forest or Century Park. The season’s energy makes it a lovely time to stroll through former French Concession streets or cruise the Huangpu River in milder weather.

April

A beautiful month to visit. Trees are in full bloom, the air is crisp but warming, and outdoor cafes begin to buzz. April often sees daytime highs around 20°C, perfect for taking in views from Shanghai Tower or biking along Suzhou Creek. The cherry blossoms hit their peak in local parks.

May

One of the most comfortable months in Shanghai. Highs typically sit in the mid-20s, making it ideal for open-air brunches, rooftop bars, or wandering historic areas like Xintiandi. Labour Day (early May) brings festivities and domestic crowds, so plan ahead if visiting during this period.

June

Humidity starts to rise in June, and the city often sees showers during the plum rain season. Despite this, the city stays vibrant. Long daylight hours are great for exploring places like Tianzifang’s creative alleys or enjoying an evening riverfront walk before the true summer heat sets in.

July

Shanghai enters full summer mode - hot and sticky, with highs often topping 32°C. Locals seek shade in leafy parks or cool off in air-conditioned malls. If you’re visiting, museums, aquariums, and indoor markets are your best friends during the peak of the heat.

August

Just as hot and humid as July, but tempered by lively summer festivals and seasonal produce like juicy watermelons and lotus-themed desserts. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to explore, while daytimes are best reserved for indoor attractions or high tea with a skyline view.

September

Temperatures begin to ease, with September highs around 27°C. It’s a lovely transitional month - less rain, bluer skies, and a festive mood as Mid-Autumn Festival approaches. Locals gather with family and friends, exchanging mooncakes and enjoying lantern displays across the city.

October

Arguably the best time to visit. With clear skies, low humidity, and highs in the low-to-mid 20s, October offers perfect walking weather. The Golden Week holiday early in the month brings crowds and celebrations. Afterward, the city settles into a peaceful autumn rhythm - ideal for leisurely days outdoors.

November

November brings cooler air and softer light - a lovely atmosphere for art exhibitions, architecture walks, or tea in historic villas. Daytime temperatures are usually around 15°C. The city’s fashion-forward edge comes alive with design festivals and pop-up events throughout the month.

December

Winter returns with crisp air and festive lights. While not traditional, Shanghai has embraced Christmas with sparkling displays, markets, and themed events in upscale areas like the Former French Concession. December highs average around 10°C, so layer up for evening walks or riverside dinners with a view.
