Mumbai

As one of the world’s largest cities and the home of the thriving Bollywood movie industry, Mumbai is an intense, colourful and rewarding experience for those who visit it. As one of the more cosmopolitan and liberals cities in India, Mumbai is home to an increasing number of upscale Western-style shopping and dining outlets. However, a walk through the backstreets of the city will soon reveal that Mumbai still retains its traditional charms.

Amongst the must-see sights of Mumbai are the Horniman Circle Gardens in the Fort District, where you can enjoy a relaxing walk and the Kala Ghoda district which is packed with museums and galleries. Meanwhile, Elephanta Island, accessible by boat from the mainland, hosts ancient rock carvings and the chance to see wild monkeys.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Mumbai’s most pleasant month: dry air, low humidity, and blue skies. Daytime peaks hover around 30°C, making it ideal for city walks, beach sunsets, and festivals like the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival preview events and Makar Sankranti kite-flying. Evenings invite al fresco dining or rooftop bars with views over Marine Drive.

February

Comfortably warm and buzzing with cultural energy. The full Kala Ghoda Arts Festival brings colour, creativity and performances across the heritage district. Outdoor markets and sea-facing promenades are at their best before temperatures begin their gradual rise.

March

As spring slips into summer, the days grow warmer and more humid. Holi adds bursts of colour and celebration across the city. Early March is great for open-air events and walking tours; later in the month it’s wiser to plan activities for mornings or evenings.

April

Summer tightens its grip. Temperatures can push into the mid-30s and the heat is compounded by the city’s humidity. Locals seek refuge in air-conditioned cafes, cinemas, and malls. It’s a great time to explore museums like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya or take a ferry to Elephanta Island early in the day.

May

Typically the hottest month, with peaks often exceeding 35°C. Mumbai slows a little in anticipation of the monsoon. Coastal breezes offer mild relief in the evenings, and summer mangoes flood markets - perfect for tasting Alphonsos in their prime.

June

The long-awaited monsoon arrives. The first rains are celebrated city-wide, refreshing the atmosphere and cooling things down. Expect dramatic skies, lush greenery, and regular downpours. It’s a moody, cinematic side of the city - ideal for cafe-hopping, bookshops, and hot chai during thunderstorms.

July

Rain dominates daily life. Streets can flood, and transport slows, but locals take it in stride. Still, this is the Mumbai that inspired countless Bollywood scenes - from lovers running through the rain to local trains chugging along soaked tracks. Raincoats and waterproof shoes are essential for visitors.

August

The rain persists, but there's a rhythm to it now. Festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami bring celebration, and the markets brim with sweets and decorations. Between showers, this is a soulful time to visit, especially if you enjoy Mumbai at its most local and less tourist-driven.

September

Ganesh Chaturthi takes over the city - vibrant processions, giant idols, and ocean immersions that stretch for days. Rain tapers off by mid-month. While still humid, Mumbai begins drying out, and city parks like Sanjay Gandhi National Park burst with monsoon-fed greenery.

October

Post-monsoon freshness meets emerging heat. October sees a return to clearer skies and high humidity. Temperatures often sit around 33°C, but evenings are livelier again. Diwali preparations begin, with lights, markets, and fireworks bringing energy back to the streets.

November

Drier, sunnier, and still warm. The festive glow of Diwali continues early in the month, while the city's cultural calendar gears up with concerts, exhibitions, and fairs. It’s an excellent time for coastal strolls or art district explorations in Fort and Colaba.

December

Pleasant and festive. Temperatures peak in the high 20s - perfect for evening markets, live music events, and Christmas celebrations around Bandra’s charming churches and bakeries. The city feels celebratory yet calm, a contrast to its usual pace.
