When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Quiet settles over the Dalmatian Coast, with cool sea air and empty stone streets in historic towns. Harbours take on a reflective stillness, and coastal walks feel unhurried without the summer crowds. Occasional rain passes through, giving way to clear views across the Adriatic.

February

The coastline remains calm, with daytime temperatures typically around 8–12°C. Fishing villages continue at a slower pace, and island life feels particularly authentic at this time of year. Crisp light makes it a rewarding period for photography along the waterfronts.

March

A gentle shift begins as almond blossoms and early wildflowers appear along the hillsides. By March, cafés begin to open more regularly, and ferry routes grow busier. Coastal paths become increasingly inviting for longer walks.

April

Milder conditions settle in, with temperatures often between 13–18°C. April brings a fresh energy to towns like Split and Dubrovnik, where outdoor dining and harbour strolls return. The sea begins to shimmer under longer, brighter days.

May

The coastline feels lively yet still relaxed, with warm sunshine and blooming landscapes. Daytime highs usually reach around 18–23°C, ideal for island hopping or exploring historic centres. Clear skies and calm seas create excellent conditions for boat trips.

June

Early summer offers long, sunlit days and a vibrant coastal atmosphere. Beaches become more inviting, and the Adriatic is calm enough for swimming and kayaking. Morning exploration is particularly rewarding before the midday warmth sets in.

July

Peak summer brings intense sunshine, with temperatures often reaching 28–32°C. Coastal towns are at their liveliest, with festivals, open-air dining, and late evenings by the water. July is ideal for enjoying island beaches and clear, warm seas.

August

Hot, dry weather continues, and the coastline remains busy with visitors. The sea offers a refreshing escape, while shaded alleys and waterfront terraces provide relief from the midday heat. Evenings are warm and sociable, with activity centred around harbours and squares.

September

A softer pace returns as temperatures ease to around 22–26°C. The sea retains its warmth, making swimming and sailing particularly enjoyable. September light adds a golden hue to the coastline, perfect for photography and relaxed exploration.

October

Autumn brings a quieter atmosphere, with cooler air and occasional rainfall. Temperatures often sit between 17–21°C, creating comfortable conditions for walking coastal trails. Vineyards and olive groves show seasonal change, adding depth to inland scenery.

November

The coast grows calmer, with fewer visitors and a more local rhythm to daily life. November skies can shift quickly from bright sunshine to moody clouds, offering dramatic seascapes. It’s a good time for cultural visits and exploring historic towns without crowds.

December

Winter returns gently, with cool air and peaceful coastal scenes. Festive decorations appear in larger towns, adding warmth to the quieter season. Clear days still allow for scenic walks along the waterfront and views across the islands.
