California Wine Country

Famed for its vineyards and wineries, beautiful countryside, cuisine, upscale restaurants, luxury hotels and historical architecture, Californian Wine Country is the premier wine growing region located in the northern Bay Area of California.

Where to Book

What you’ll love most about California’s Wine Country

  • The weather in the wine region is near perfect year-round. Very little rain – if any, falls in the months between May and October
  • Combining a handful of days in the region with a city stay in San Francisco and some time on the beach around Monterey makes for a recommended holiday itinerary. Add Yosemite or Tahoe to the mix for the ultimate adventure
  • The area of Napa Valley alone has over 400 wineries within its borders and thousands of acres of vineyards. Sonoma County actually produces more wine than the better-known Napa
  • Take the Napa Valley Wine Train, renowned for its wonderful food and extensive wine list, as it winds through the Californian vineyards
  • Great food and wine go hand-in-hand so it’s no surprise to learn that California’s Wine Country has some of the most exclusive restaurants on the west coast
  • Besides wine-tasting and delectable cuisine, the region is a popular location for scenic bike rides, hiking and canoeing on Napa River

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter in the vineyards is quiet and reflective, with cool, misty mornings and occasional rain. January is ideal for strolling through rolling hills and exploring historic wineries without the crowds. The muted winter colours provide dramatic photography opportunities across the valleys.

February

Temperatures remain cool, often around 10–13°C, with rainfall helping the vineyards recharge for the season ahead. Morning light across the vines enhances the textures of bare canes, while afternoons are perfect for wine tasting or indoor tours. Wildlife, including deer and songbirds, becomes more noticeable in quieter corners.

March

Spring begins subtly, with temperatures rising slightly and wildflowers emerging across the landscape. March mornings are particularly inviting for walking vineyard trails or exploring nearby oak woodlands. Light rain nourishes the soil, keeping the countryside vibrant and fresh.

April

Settled weather becomes more frequent, with highs generally between 15–18°C. Coastal fog lifts earlier, allowing afternoons of exploration in the vineyards or along scenic country roads. The combination of sunlight and lush greenery provides excellent conditions for photography.

May

Warmth spreads across the valleys, with daytime temperatures often around 18–22°C. Vineyards begin to show early shoots, and the surrounding hillsides are rich with colour. Morning walks or cycling between towns are particularly enjoyable before midday heat rises.

June

Summer arrives in earnest, bringing clear skies and sun-drenched landscapes. June mornings are ideal for vineyard tours, while afternoons offer opportunities to enjoy terraces or shaded tasting rooms. Birds and small wildlife are active in hedgerows and oak groves.

July

High summer sees temperatures frequently around 25–28°C, making early morning or late afternoon excursions the most comfortable. Harvest preparations begin in some vineyards, and the golden light of evening enhances rolling hills and distant mountains. Coastal breezes help moderate the warmth in valley areas.

August

Warm, dry conditions continue, with highs often reaching 27–30°C. Afternoon shadows provide relief for walking through vineyards, while mornings are perfect for photography of sunlit grape clusters. The countryside feels alive with agricultural activity and wildlife along river corridors.

September

Temperatures gradually ease to around 23–27°C, coinciding with the peak of grape harvest. September light creates stunning contrasts across the vines, ideal for photography and tasting tours. The combination of warmth and early autumn colours makes this a particularly scenic month.

October

Autumn settles in, bringing cooler air and crisp mornings. Days remain mild, generally around 18–22°C, perfect for walking among colourful vineyards. Late-season harvest activities continue, and the landscape glows with the warm tones of changing foliage.

November

Rain returns gradually, and temperatures drop slightly, often around 12–16°C. Vineyards take on a more subdued appearance, while quieter roads and towns offer a peaceful setting for exploration. Cloudy mornings and occasional sunshine create moody, photogenic skies.

December

The year closes with cool, damp conditions, and occasional frost on valley floors. December is a quieter month for tasting rooms and scenic drives, with early mornings providing soft light over the bare vines and rolling hills. Coastal winds add crispness to afternoons spent outdoors.
