When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Banff is blanketed in snow, with temperatures around –15°C to –5°C. The park is serene and largely quiet, ideal for skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Frozen lakes and snow-covered peaks create iconic winter scenery, while wildlife such as elk and deer can occasionally be spotted against the white backdrop.

February

Cold persists, generally –14°C to –4°C, but the long days bring bright winter sunlight. Ski resorts are in full swing, and frozen waterfalls and ice fields offer spectacular photography opportunities. Evening skies can reveal northern lights in clear conditions.

March

Early spring begins subtly, though snow still dominates higher elevations. Temperatures gradually rise to –5°C to 5°C. Lower trails become accessible, and wildlife starts to reappear. It’s a quieter time for snow-based activities while waiting for the warmer hiking season.

April

Temperatures vary widely, roughly –2°C to 10°C. Snow continues to linger at higher altitudes, while valleys start showing signs of greenery. Walking trails and wildlife-spotting tours become increasingly rewarding, though some roads and trails remain icy.

May

Late spring brings milder days, typically 5°C to 15°C. Snow melts in many lower areas, revealing wildflower meadows and rushing rivers. Hiking trails open fully, and wildlife, including bears emerging from hibernation, is more visible. The park’s waterfalls and lakes are particularly photogenic.

June

Early summer is warm and settled, around 10°C to 20°C. Alpine meadows are in full bloom, and trails and lakes are easily accessible. Canoeing, kayaking, and cycling are popular, and the long daylight hours make it perfect for multi-day excursions.

July

High summer sees temperatures around 15°C to 25°C, with sunny, dry conditions ideal for exploring. Lakes such as Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are warm enough for paddling, and wildlife including elk, deer, and birds is abundant.

August

Warm conditions continue, 14°C to 24°C. Trails, viewpoints, and lakes remain busy, though early mornings provide quieter conditions for photography and wildlife spotting. Clear skies and calm waters create ideal conditions for outdoor adventure and scenic drives.

September

Early autumn brings cooler days, generally 10°C to 18°C. The first hints of fall colour appear in forests, and wildlife activity is high as animals prepare for winter. Hiking and cycling remain comfortable, with fewer crowds than in summer.

October

Autumn deepens, with temperatures dropping to around 4°C to 12°C. Fall foliage is at its peak, creating dramatic vistas for photography. Trails remain accessible in lower elevations, but higher areas may begin to see early snowfalls.

November

Late autumn is cooler and quieter, typically –2°C to 6°C. Snow begins to return to most areas, and many park facilities begin preparing for winter. Wildlife is active but less visible, and visitor numbers are low, providing a tranquil experience.

December

Winter settles in fully, with temperatures around –15°C to –5°C. Snow blankets the park, creating iconic alpine scenery. Skiing, snowshoeing, and winter photography are popular, and the frozen lakes and forests offer dramatic winter landscapes under crisp, clear skies.
