  • Flight Time: 3 hours 30 mins

In mainland Greece, you’ll find Halkidiki, home to a large peninsula that resembles a hand with three fingers, although Greeks often refer to these as ‘legs’. This historic region has plenty to offer its visitors, whether you’re looking for culture or somewhere to simply unwind.

Halkidiki is not only the birthplace of Aristotle but also home to the ancient city of Olynthus, known for its well-preserved mosaic floors. Meanwhile, Kassandra (the most westerly peninsula) has a more modern and touristy feel with many resorts, bars and nightclubs.

Menorca

  • Flight Time: 2 hours 20 mins

Known for being one of the most relaxed of the Balearic Islands, Menorca boasts many sandy beaches and bays perfect for families and couples alike. Fortunately, Menorca is mild enough in May that you can hike (or drive) up Mount Toro — which is more of a hill than a mountain — to see the some of the best views that the island has to offer.

Up here you’ll also find the stunning catholic church of Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Toro (Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Bull). Whilst active travellers will enjoy a walk along one of S’Albufera Nature Reserve’s many hiking trails, there are plenty of beautiful beaches for the sunseekers that simply want to relax.

Santorini

Of all the hot destinations in May, the Greek island of Santorini is not one to miss. This volcanic island has been shaped by a devastating eruption that took place more than 3,000 years ago, which left in its wake an underwater caldera (crater) which you can still see from the island’s many cliffs.

Now, however, Santorini is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, known for its luxurious hotels and whitewashed villages. To witness one of the best sunsets on the planet, head to Oia and for unusual volcanic grey-sand beaches, head to Kamari.

Looking further afield to the Caribbean, the stunning island nation of St Vincent & The Grenadines is a paradise that remains unspoilt by mass tourism, making it the perfect getaway for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday. The main island of St. Vincent is blessed with some of the best beaches in the region, without the crowds that you might find at better-known Caribbean destinations. Plus, heading to the island in May is an opportune time to holiday on the island, maximising your time on the beaches before the rains come in the following months.

Texas

Texas is, without a doubt, one of the cornerstones of America’s iconography. From its rolling plains and roaming bison – which still live in some of the state’s parks and reserves – to its cowboys and their rodeos.

As the second-largest state in the US, here you can live like a cowboy and explore the modern metropolises of Dallas, Houston and Austin, the latter of which is widely regarded as the live music capital of the world, perfect for a bit of honky-tonk! May’s a superb time to experience Texas ahead of the dry heat of the summer months.

Sardinia

  • Temperature: 22º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 9
  • Flight Time: 2 hours 30 mins

With almost 2,000km of coastline and a rugged inner-landscape marked with hiking trails, the Italian island of Sardinia makes for a wonderful May holiday destination for both beach-lovers and intrepid explorers.

Dotted all around this island you’ll find the ruins of more than 7,000 nuraghe, ancient structures that are believed to have been built in the Bronze Age — the oldest of which (Su Nuraxi in Barumini) dates back to 1500 B.C. If you’re looking for culture and heritage you might also like to visit the Temple of Antas or the National Archaeology Museum in Cagliari.

With so much to offer, we’d suggest hiring a car and exploring as much of the island as possible. There are also many golden-sandy beaches to visit as well, so be sure to save some time for sunbathing.

Cala Carsara, Maddalena Archipelago in Sardinia

Paxos

  • Temperature: 23º
  • Sunshine: 9 hours
  • Rainy days: 8
  • Flight Time: 3 hours (further travel required)

First off is the Greek island of Paxos, the smallest of the Ionian islands. It’s so small in fact (just 10km by 4km!) that it doesn’t have an airport and travellers must instead fly to Corfu and get a ferry or hydrofoil to Paxos. Don’t let this little extra leg put you off though, Paxos is as picturesque as it is tranquil and it’s well worth going the extra mile to get there.

A well-kept secret among sailors, this tiny island has an abundance of secluded beaches whilst the charming towns of Gaios (where you’ll find the port), Lakka and Longos boast plenty of traditional tavernas offering everything from seafood to Greek mezze.
