When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter settles over Virginia, with temperatures ranging from -2°C to 10°C, depending on the region. The Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park see occasional snowfall, creating beautiful winter hiking and scenic drives along the Skyline Drive. In cities like Richmond and Alexandria, historic sites remain open, while wine country in Charlottesville offers intimate tasting experiences.

February

With similar winter temperatures, Virginia Beach sees fewer visitors, making it a peaceful time for brisk walks along the Atlantic coastline. Presidents’ Day events in Williamsburg and Mount Vernon highlight Virginia’s role in U.S. history. If snow lingers, skiing at Wintergreen Resort or Massanutten provides a mountain escape.

March

Spring begins, with temperatures climbing to 8°C to 15°C. Daffodils bloom in Norfolk’s Botanical Garden, and the Charlottesville area comes alive with early blossoms. The Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach and St. Patrick’s Day parades bring energy to coastal areas.

April

Virginia bursts into bloom, with the famous Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. spilling over into Northern Virginia. Temperatures hover between 10°C and 22°C, making it perfect for outdoor adventures. The Historic Garden Week in late April allows visitors to tour beautifully landscaped gardens and stately homes across the state.

May

As summer approaches, temperatures warm to 15°C to 26°C. Shenandoah National Park is at its most vibrant, with wildflowers and waterfalls at peak flow. Virginia Beach’s Boardwalk Festival kicks off the coastal season, while wine lovers can explore the Monticello Wine Trail.

June

The arrival of summer brings warm days, with temperatures reaching 20°C to 30°C. Outdoor lovers flock to Smith Mountain Lake for water sports, while Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown Settlement become lively with reenactments and festivals. The Chesapeake Bay region is ideal for kayaking and fresh seafood feasts.

July

The height of summer sees temperatures ranging between 22°C and 32°C. Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore welcome beachgoers, while mountain areas like Blacksburg and the Blue Ridge Parkway offer cooler retreats. The 4th of July fireworks in Richmond and along the coast light up the skies.

August

Late summer heat lingers, with temperatures still between 22°C and 31°C. It’s the best time for exploring Virginia’s caverns, such as Luray and Skyline Caverns, which stay naturally cool. The Virginia Highlands Festival in Abingdon celebrates Appalachian culture through arts, crafts, and live music.

September

Cooler evenings return, with daytime highs of 18°C to 28°C. The start of fall means prime conditions for hiking in Shenandoah, with waterfalls still flowing and trails less crowded. The Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach marks the season’s transition with sand sculpting and seafood celebrations.

October

Fall foliage peaks across the Blue Ridge Parkway, with crisp temperatures making it ideal for scenic drives and vineyard visits. The Richmond Folk Festival draws music lovers, while Williamsburg’s Haunted Ghost Tours tap into the state’s colonial history.

November

Sweater weather settles in, with temperatures dropping to 5°C to 16°C. Thanksgiving brings festive markets and feasts, particularly in Alexandria and Middleburg, where horse country traditions shine.

December

The holiday spirit takes over, with Christmas light displays at Busch Gardens’ Christmas Town and the Grand Illumination in Colonial Williamsburg. In Roanoke and Charlottesville, festive markets offer mulled cider and artisanal gifts, wrapping up the year with a touch of charm.
