When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Midsummer is hot and humid, with temperatures around 30–33°C and frequent tropical showers. The lush landscape is at its most vibrant, and the islands’ waterways and beaches offer dramatic scenery. Early mornings are best for wildlife spotting and exploring coastal mudflats, while afternoons call for indoor respite or shaded walks.

February

Humidity remains high, with daily highs around 31°C. Occasional storms refresh the forests and wetlands, supporting birdlife and marine activity. Local art centres and community cultural experiences offer immersive opportunities while avoiding the midday heat.

March

The wet season continues, though rainfall begins to taper slightly. Temperatures remain in the low 30s°C. Mangroves and forests are rich and verdant, and early morning or late afternoon boat trips are ideal for spotting saltwater crocodiles, seabirds, and turtles.

April

Rainfall eases, with highs around 30°C and more settled days. Bushwalking, cultural tours, and coastal exploration become more accessible, while the tropical vegetation remains dense and dramatic. Sunsets over the wetlands and beaches are particularly striking.

May

Temperatures ease slightly to 28–31°C, with drier conditions and lower humidity. Wildlife is more visible on land and in the waterways, making walking and boat tours rewarding. Early mornings and late afternoons provide the most comfortable conditions for exploration.

June

Winter brings drier, slightly cooler days of 25–28°C and crisp mornings. The Tiwi Islands’ landscapes are easier to traverse, and the weather is ideal for walking, birdwatching, and cultural tours. Coastal waters remain warm enough for kayaking or short swims.

July

Highs around 24–27°C make for very pleasant winter conditions. Wildlife activity is at its peak, and the islands’ unique Aboriginal art centres are welcoming. Bush and coastal walks are comfortable, and clear skies enhance photography and wildlife spotting.

August
