When to Visit
Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.
January
Winter dominates New York State, with temperatures generally –6°C to 2°C. Snow blankets upstate regions, creating opportunities for skiing in the Adirondacks or the Catskills. Downstate, including New York City, is cold but less snowy, making museum visits, indoor cultural attractions, and historic streetscapes appealing.
February
Cold persists, –5°C to 3°C, with occasional snowstorms across the state. Ice skating, winter festivals, and seasonal markets enliven urban centres, while upstate trails and ski resorts offer prime conditions for winter sports.
March
Early signs of spring emerge in southern areas, with temperatures 0°C–10°C. Snow remains in higher elevations, but lower valleys begin to thaw. Wildlife starts to become more visible, and city parks and gardens begin showing early buds.
April

Warm and occasionally humid, 21°C–29°C. Parks, lakes, and trails are ideal for hiking, cycling, and boating. Cultural events continue, and early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to explore without the heat.

Early autumn brings cooling temperatures, around 15°C–23°C. Foliage begins to turn in northern and upstate regions, creating striking scenery. Outdoor activities, including walking, cycling, and vineyard visits, are particularly rewarding.
