When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

In the north, snow blankets the Sierra Nevada, transforming Lake Tahoe into a winter playground. Ski resorts buzz with activity, while Carson City and Reno settle into a quieter, snow-dusted rhythm. In the south, Las Vegas enjoys cool, sunny days, ideal for outdoor exploring without the summer heat. Expect temperatures in the high single digits to low teens°C in the south, and well below freezing at higher elevations.

February

Snow persists in the mountains, with bluebird ski days drawing visitors to slopes and snowy trails. Desert regions remain dry and crisp. Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon are particularly stunning this time of year, with rust-red formations under soft winter light. Las Vegas remains lively but pleasant, with average highs around 16°C.

March

Hints of spring emerge. Wildflowers begin to bloom in desert areas, especially in Death Valley (just across the California border) and Nevada’s southern basins. Days grow longer, making it a good time for hiking and road trips. Snowmelt feeds rivers in the north, and Lake Mead sees the first paddlers of the season.

April

Spring takes hold. Temperatures in the desert rise comfortably, reaching 24-27°C by mid-month. High-altitude regions are still thawing, but ghost towns and scenic byways across the state are increasingly accessible. It’s an ideal time for off-the-beaten-track travel - think hot springs in the Great Basin or stargazing in one of Nevada’s dark sky parks.

May

One of the best times to explore. Warm days and cool nights make desert road trips a joy - places like Tonopah, Ely, and the Extraterrestrial Highway shine under wide, blue skies. Great Basin National Park reopens its high-altitude trails, while northern lakes and rivers fill with anglers and kayakers. Las Vegas heats up, but spring blooms linger in nearby canyons.

June

Early summer brings dry heat to the south and sunny skies across the state. Hiking in Red Rock Canyon, kayaking on Lake Tahoe, or camping in the Ruby Mountains becomes more popular. Expect temperatures to exceed 35°C in Las Vegas, while higher elevations remain much cooler - ideal for escaping the desert heat.

July

The hottest month in the southern desert, with daytime highs often surpassing 40°C. Activities shift to early mornings or cooler mountain retreats. In the north, alpine lakes and shaded trails offer respite, while the Fourth of July celebrations light up towns large and small. Stargazing is superb - Nevada’s clear desert skies are a standout feature of the season.

August

Still sweltering in the south, but northern Nevada stays more temperate. Lake Tahoe and the Ruby Mountains offer prime conditions for hiking, boating, and fishing. Preparations begin for Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert - a surreal gathering that transforms the arid playa into a temporary city of art, music, and radical self-expression.

September

One of Nevada’s most dramatic months. Burning Man closes the summer with a bang, while elsewhere, temperatures ease and landscapes soften under golden light. In the north, autumn begins to colour the aspens and cottonwoods. Daytime highs in Las Vegas hover around 32°C or so - still hot, but far more bearable than midsummer.

October

Autumn sweeps across the state. The eastern Sierra sees vibrant foliage, and rural highways turn scenic with golden grasses and russet hillsides. It’s harvest time in local vineyards near Pahrump and scenic drives near the Great Basin are breathtaking. Cool mornings and sunny afternoons define the month, perfect for exploring old mining towns or petroglyph trails.

November

The desert quiets. Cold returns to northern Nevada, with snow beginning to fall in higher elevations. In the south, pleasant days continue - think 18-22°C in Las Vegas - and outdoor activities remain in full swing. Wildlife spotting improves as migratory birds arrive and animals become more active in the cooler air.

December

Winter returns. Snow transforms the Sierra and Great Basin, offering ski adventures and cosy cabin escapes. Las Vegas decks itself out with festive lights and elaborate displays, while the desert offers crisp, quiet days for reflection and slow travel. In the north, the chill sets in - a stark contrast to the neon-lit warmth of the Strip.
