Madrid

A cosmopolitan city which works hard by day and plays harder at night, Madrid is one of the most exciting cities in Europe. Madrid’s artistic streak is highly visible, with the Plaza de Cibeles and the Royal Palace providing just two examples of the city’s sophisticated architecture. There are also world-class museums and galleries dotted over the city, including the Prado, which houses Spain’s premier art collection.

The Spanish capital also contains a number of upmarket boutiques, with the Grand Via providing the best area to shop until you drop. You can also experience life like a Madrileño by dining late at a tapas bar before hitting the bars and clubs and partying into the small hours. However, if you are looking for a more sedate city break, you can also enjoy a quiet walk in the beautiful Parque del Buen Retiro.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

The year begins with cool, bright days that are well suited to exploring Madrid's grand boulevards, historic squares and world-class museums. Winter sunshine often bathes the city's elegant architecture, creating excellent conditions for photography. A quieter atmosphere means major attractions can be enjoyed at a more relaxed pace.

February

Crisp conditions continue, with daytime temperatures typically around 10–13°C. Leafless trees reveal uninterrupted views through parks and gardens, while traditional markets and cafés provide a warm retreat between sightseeing. Clear skies are common, particularly after cooler mornings.

March

The first signs of spring appear as blossom begins to brighten the city's green spaces. By March, longer daylight hours make walking through neighbourhoods such as La Latina and Malasaña especially enjoyable. Outdoor terraces gradually become busier as the season changes.

April

Spring is firmly established, with temperatures often reaching around 17–21°C. April is ideal for visiting Retiro Park, the Royal Palace and Madrid's open-air plazas before the summer heat arrives. Fresh greenery and colourful flower displays enhance the city's elegant streets.

May

Comfortable warmth settles across the capital, with daytime highs generally between 22–26°C. Local festivals bring music and celebration to parks and public squares, while long afternoons are perfect for exploring on foot. The pleasant conditions also make day trips into the surrounding countryside particularly appealing.

June

Long, sun-filled days encourage leisurely sightseeing from morning through to evening. Rooftop terraces, shaded gardens and outdoor cafés become favourite places to enjoy the city's vibrant atmosphere. June evenings are particularly enjoyable as locals gather in squares well after sunset.

July

Summer reaches its peak, with temperatures frequently around 32–36°C. Early mornings are the most comfortable time to visit major landmarks, while museums offer welcome respite during the hottest part of the day. As the heat fades, the city's nightlife and outdoor dining scene comes to life.

August

Hot, dry weather continues, although the pace becomes noticeably more relaxed as many residents head away on holiday. Tree-lined parks provide welcome shade, and cultural attractions remain an excellent option during warmer afternoons. Warm evenings are perfect for strolling through illuminated plazas.

September

The intense summer heat begins to soften, with temperatures often around 25–29°C. September offers an excellent balance of sunshine and comfortable conditions for walking tours, gallery visits and outdoor dining. Parks regain a fresher appearance after the height of summer.

October

Autumn brings cooler, settled weather, with temperatures generally between 18–22°C. Golden foliage adds colour to Madrid's parks and avenues, while the softer afternoon light creates beautiful views of the city's historic architecture. It's an excellent time for leisurely exploration without the summer crowds.

November

A quieter season returns as cooler air settles over the city. Daytime temperatures often reach around 13–17°C, making sightseeing comfortable, particularly during the middle of the day. Museums, galleries and traditional food markets become especially inviting as evenings grow longer.

December

Festive decorations transform Madrid's streets and squares, creating a lively atmosphere across the city centre. December combines seasonal markets, illuminated boulevards and mild winter afternoons, making it an enjoyable time to explore on foot. Cooler evenings provide the perfect excuse to experience the city's welcoming cafés and restaurants.
