When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter settles gently across the valley, with temperatures around 3–8°C. The great châteaux stand stark against pale skies, their gardens quiet and sculptural. It’s a contemplative time for exploring interiors — grand staircases, tapestries and galleries — before retreating to cosy cafés in historic towns such as Tours or Amboise.

February

Still cool, though brighter days begin to appear. Frost often lingers in vineyard rows at dawn, creating atmospheric landscapes along the riverbanks. Fewer visitors mean peaceful tours of landmark castles and unhurried visits to local wine cellars, where tastings provide welcome warmth.

March

Early spring brings highs of 10–14°C. The first blossoms appear in formal gardens, and riverside paths begin to stir with cyclists and walkers. It’s a pleasant time for scenic drives between châteaux, exploring market squares and sampling seasonal produce as the countryside gradually awakens.

April

Mild and fresh, 13–17°C, with bursts of colour in château gardens and orchards. Outdoor exploration becomes increasingly inviting — cycling along the Loire à Vélo route, strolling through manicured parkland or picnicking beside the river. Towns feel lively yet remain comfortably uncrowded.

May

Late spring is one of the valley’s most rewarding seasons, with temperatures of 17–21°C and long daylight hours. Wisteria drapes stone façades, vineyards turn a vivid green and open-air markets brim with regional cheeses, asparagus and strawberries. It’s ideal for combining cultural sightseeing with gentle outdoor pursuits.

June

Early summer brings warm days of 21–25°C. Château gardens are at their peak, roses in full bloom and fountains sparkling in the sun. River cruises, cycling routes and village festivals add vitality, while golden evenings lend themselves to terrace dining and wine tasting beneath open skies.

July

Warm and vibrant, with highs around 24–28°C. The valley is lively, particularly at its most famous castles. Early mornings and late afternoons are best for exploring expansive grounds or wandering shaded woodland paths. Outdoor concerts and son et lumière shows animate château courtyards after dusk.

August

Often the warmest month, 25–30°C. Sunlight glints off the Loire’s broad waters, and sunflower fields brighten the landscape. Harvest preparations begin in the vineyards, and village fêtes celebrate regional food and wine. It’s a sociable, energetic time, balanced by tranquil riverbanks and forested retreats.

September

One of the most atmospheric months, with temperatures easing to 19–24°C. The grape harvest brings quiet industry to the vineyards, and markets brim with autumn produce. Softer light enhances the honey-coloured stone of manor houses and churches, making it ideal for photography and leisurely exploration.

October

Autumn deepens, 14–18°C, and foliage turns amber and gold along riverbanks and in formal gardens. Crowds thin, leaving a more reflective pace. It’s a rewarding time for scenic drives, woodland walks and savouring hearty regional dishes paired with newly harvested wines.

November

Cooler and quieter, around 8–12°C. Mist sometimes hangs low over the river at dawn, adding a romantic air to château silhouettes. Indoor cultural visits — from historic kitchens to art collections — pair well with relaxed afternoons in traditional brasseries.

December

Winter returns, with temperatures between 4–9°C. Many châteaux decorate their interiors for Christmas, with candlelit displays and festive greenery enhancing their historic charm. Town squares host small seasonal markets, and the valley feels intimate and atmospheric beneath crisp winter skies.
