When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Warm tropical days and lush green landscapes make Hawaii an appealing winter escape. The islands' dramatic volcanic scenery, waterfalls and palm-fringed beaches are particularly vibrant after seasonal rainfall, while the Pacific often delivers spectacular sunsets. Humpback whales can frequently be seen offshore during this time of year.

February

Pleasant conditions continue, with daytime temperatures typically around 24–27°C. Coastal walks and rainforest trails are especially rewarding, while calmer mornings are ideal for snorkelling in sheltered bays. Whale watching remains one of the highlights across many of the islands.

March

The islands begin to enjoy longer, brighter days as tropical vegetation flourishes. March is an excellent time for exploring volcanic national parks, botanical gardens and scenic coastal drives before the busier holiday period. Waterfalls continue to flow strongly, adding to the dramatic scenery.

April

A balance of sunshine and occasional refreshing showers keeps the landscapes beautifully green, with temperatures often between 25–28°C. Coral reefs offer excellent visibility for snorkelling, while hiking trails reveal sweeping ocean views and colourful native plants. The varied scenery makes this a particularly rewarding month for photography.

May

The weather becomes increasingly settled, with daytime highs generally around 26–29°C. Beaches are ideal for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking, while quieter trails lead through lush valleys and volcanic landscapes. Tropical gardens remain full of vibrant colour.

June

Long, sunny days provide ideal conditions for island hopping and outdoor adventures. Coastal roads reveal dramatic cliffs, hidden coves and black-sand beaches, while warm evenings invite leisurely walks along the shoreline. June also brings excellent conditions for exploring higher elevations before afternoon cloud develops.

July

Summer sunshine dominates, with temperatures often reaching 28–31°C. Calm seas make snorkelling, sailing and surfing particularly enjoyable, while tropical forests provide a cooler contrast to the beaches. Cultural celebrations and traditional music performances add extra character across the islands.

August

The warmest part of the year continues, although refreshing trade winds often help moderate the heat. Sunrise hikes, scenic helicopter flights and coastal viewpoints showcase Hawaii's remarkable diversity, from volcanic craters to emerald valleys. Sea turtles are regularly spotted around reefs and sheltered beaches.

September

Warm seas and quieter beaches make this an excellent time to enjoy the coastline. Temperatures generally range between 27–30°C, and September offers superb conditions for diving, paddleboarding and exploring the islands at a relaxed pace. The softer light towards evening creates beautiful coastal photography.

October

The tropical landscape remains lush as occasional showers return to some areas. Walking trails through rainforest and volcanic terrain are particularly rewarding, while beaches continue to enjoy plenty of sunshine. Birdlife is especially active in the islands' protected reserves.

November

Comfortable conditions persist, with daytime temperatures around 25–28°C. The Pacific begins welcoming the first returning humpback whales, while the ocean remains warm enough for swimming and snorkelling. Cooler evenings make outdoor dining and coastal strolls especially pleasant.

December

The year ends with a blend of warm sunshine, tropical greenery and seasonal celebrations across the islands. Winter swells attract surfers to Hawaii's famous north-facing beaches, while calmer shores remain perfect for relaxation. The combination of volcanic landscapes, golden beaches and vibrant marine life provides a memorable finish to the year.
