When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Mid-summer brings long, hot days and balmy nights. Expect highs around 28–30°C with high humidity and occasional tropical downpours, usually in the late afternoon. Beaches buzz with activity, surf is consistent, and theme parks are in full swing during school holidays. A great time for sunrise swims and air-conditioned escapes in between the heat.

February

Still hot and humid, February tends to be one of the wettest months, with lush greenery in the hinterland thanks to the rains. Waterfalls in Springbrook and Lamington National Parks are in fine flow. Quieter than January, it’s a good time for couples or solo travellers seeking a beach break with fewer crowds.

March

The heat eases slightly and rainfall begins to drop. Days are still warm, around 27–29°C, and ocean temperatures remain perfect for swimming and surfing. It's a lovely time for exploring the coastal walkways or heading inland to chase waterfalls and glow worm caves before the dry sets in.

April

A favourite month for many locals. The weather turns mild and sunny, with lower humidity and average highs around 25°C. The Easter school holidays bring some bustle, but it’s an excellent time to visit — ideal for hiking, beach picnics, or whale-watching preparation as the migration season begins late in the month.

May

Clear skies and crisp mornings return, marking the start of the dry season. Surf is still good, and it’s a comfortable time for outdoor adventures in the hinterland. With fewer tourists around, May offers a more relaxed pace, cooler nights, and the chance to explore local markets and coastal towns without the crowds.

June

A quieter time with mild days around 21–23°C and cool evenings. Humpback whales begin their migration north, and boat tours set out from the coast. Inland walks are invigorating under clear skies, and winter sun makes beach days surprisingly pleasant. Theme parks run at lower capacity, ideal for off-peak travel.

July

The Gold Coast’s coolest month, but still very mild compared to southern Australia. Days remain mostly sunny with highs around 21°C. It’s peak whale-watching season, and surfers still flock to Snapper Rocks and Burleigh Heads. Layer up for early morning coffee runs but enjoy sun-soaked afternoons.

August

Sunny, dry, and warming up again. A great time for road trips along the coast or inland to Mount Tamborine’s vineyards and rainforest walks. The beach culture returns in full, with plenty of al fresco dining and street events. Spring is just around the corner, and so are the flowers in the hinterland.

September

Spring blooms and rising temperatures bring a festive energy. With highs creeping back to 24–26°C, it’s a superb time for beach visits, scenic hikes, and family outings. Wildlife parks come alive, and events like SWELL Sculpture Festival take place along the sand. Warm days and cool nights make for excellent outdoor living.

October

Consistently warm and vibrant. Jacarandas bloom across the region and swimming conditions are ideal. Surf conditions suit both beginners and seasoned boardriders. Outdoor bars and coastal paths start buzzing in the lead-up to summer. October is perfect for those wanting heat without peak season hustle.

November

Pre-summer energy builds. Days are longer, highs often reaching 28°C, and summer storms begin to roll through in the afternoons. Schoolies celebrations kick off mid-month, transforming Surfers Paradise into a lively, youthful scene. For quieter stays, head south to Currumbin or inland to the mountain villages.

December

Summer holidays arrive. Beaches fill with swimmers and surfers, and Christmas is celebrated in true Aussie style — on the sand. Expect hot days, warm evenings, and the occasional tropical storm. With vibrant night markets, waterfront fireworks, and festive atmosphere, the Gold Coast sparkles at year’s end.
