When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Ghent in January is hushed and atmospheric. Mist drapes over the canals and cobbled lanes, while lights from St Bavo’s Cathedral and the Gravensteen reflect off damp stone. It’s the perfect time to retreat into museums or enjoy a warming bowl of Gentse Waterzooi in a cosy tavern. Temperatures often hover just above freezing, but the quiet beauty makes it worthwhile.

February

Still in winter’s grasp, the city feels introspective yet inviting. Cafés serve up rich hot chocolate and strong local brews as evenings stretch out early. Art lovers find refuge in the MSK and SMAK galleries. Highs typically reach 5-7°C, and the grey skies only make the medieval architecture more striking.

March

Hints of spring begin to show. Daffodils bloom in city parks and canal boats reappear as the season softens. By mid-March, outdoor terraces cautiously reopen. The city’s many university students return from winter break, adding a livelier hum. Temperatures start to climb, often reaching 10-11°C.

April

A vibrant month of renewal. Ghent’s courtyards and gardens burst into bloom, and events like the Floraliën or Ghent International Film Festival (when held) draw crowds. Rain is always possible, but sunny spells invite riverside strolls along the Graslei or Korenlei. The city feels bright, fresh and full of energy.

May

May is glorious. Parks are green, markets brim with local produce, and bicycles outnumber cars in much of the centre. This is an ideal time to explore Ghent’s canals by boat or linger in the Patershol neighbourhood. Expect highs of 17-19°C and the occasional festival to spill out into public squares.

June

Early summer suits Ghent perfectly. Long evenings, café terraces filled with chatter, and riverbanks dotted with picnickers bring a relaxed, youthful vibe. Local strawberries and artisan beers dominate menus. Warm days reach around 21°C, and the mood is set for open-air concerts and spontaneous exploration.

July

The city’s showstopper arrives: the Gentse Feesten, a ten-day cultural festival transforming the entire city into a stage. Street performers, concerts, and parties fill the air with energy. It’s the warmest month, with highs in the mid-20s°C, and Ghent’s population seems to double - for good reason.

August

Still lively but with a gentler pace, August is perfect for slow mornings and long dinners outdoors. Some locals leave for holidays, but many attractions remain vibrant. Parks like Citadelpark are lush, and sunset walks along the canals are unforgettable. Warm, steady days continue, ideal for relaxed exploration.

September

A golden calm returns. Students trickle back, and cultural venues launch new seasons of events. The air cools slightly, especially in the evenings, but days remain pleasantly warm at around 19-21°C. It’s a great month for photography, wine tasting, or simply enjoying the city before autumn sets in.

October

Autumn takes hold with red and amber leaves rustling along cobbled lanes. Ghent’s medieval skyline looks especially romantic in the softer light, and canal fog in the early mornings adds drama. Museums and galleries fill with exhibitions, and the city feels reflective and soulful. Highs usually settle around 13-15°C.

November

Quiet, damp, and deeply atmospheric. Ghent’s stone and water backdrop suits the soft gloom of late autumn. Cosy cafés and underground jazz bars offer refuge, and the city’s cultural life keeps ticking along. It’s a time for unhurried exploration, with highs around 8-10°C and a hint of winter in the air.

December

Ghent glows with festive charm. Lights twinkle over the Leie, markets pop up in Sint-Baafsplein, and the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine drifts through the air. Skating rinks and carousels bring cheer, and local shops offer handmade treats. Snow is rare but magical when it falls. Daytime temperatures typically reach 4-6°C.
