When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter is manatee season, and Crystal River truly comes alive beneath the surface. Cool mornings (around 18°C) and clear water make for unforgettable encounters with these gentle giants in the warm springs. The surrounding nature trails are peaceful, and the air carries that fresh, crisp calm of Florida’s mild winter.

February

Still prime time for wildlife lovers. Manatees linger in Kings Bay and Three Sisters Springs, and the cooler temperatures make kayaking or paddleboarding especially pleasant. The town is relaxed and uncrowded, with cosy seafood restaurants serving up fresh Gulf catches after a day on the water.

March

Spring begins to take hold, and the landscape brightens with new greenery. The weather warms to the low-to-mid 20s°C, ideal for exploring the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge or cycling scenic routes through Old Homosassa. Manatees start to disperse as the Gulf waters gradually warm.

April

Crystal-clear waters shimmer under stronger sunlight, and the springs take on a jewel-like blue. The crowds remain light, making it a perfect time for snorkelling, boat tours, or simply floating in the springs. Afternoon picnics beneath moss-draped oaks capture the area’s easygoing charm.

May

Warm and steady, with highs approaching 30°C, May ushers in the first true taste of summer. Locals head out fishing, kayaking, or swimming in the springs to stay cool. Sunsets over the river are striking, and the evenings remain comfortably mild for dining outdoors by the waterfront.

June

Summer is in full swing. The days grow hot and humid, but the constant 22°C spring water offers a refreshing escape. Early mornings are perfect for wildlife spotting, while brief afternoon showers bring a soft freshness to the air. It’s also a great month for boating out toward the Gulf.

July

Warm, lazy days define July. Families gather around Hunter Springs Park, and the river hums with life. Highs hover around the low 30s°C, so most activity centres on the water. Late afternoon storms are common but pass quickly, giving way to vibrant sunsets and cool evening breezes.

August

The Gulf Coast humidity lingers, but the mood remains tranquil. Scallop season brings a buzz of excitement as visitors wade through shallow waters to collect the sweet local delicacy. With nature at its most abundant, it’s an excellent time for photography and quiet paddling trips.

September

The last of summer’s warmth blends with the start of quieter days. Afternoon rain is still common, but mornings are clear and golden. The springs are calm again after the busy season, offering peaceful swims and opportunities to spot otters or herons along the riverbanks.

October

Temperatures ease into the mid-20s°C towards the end of the month, and the air turns pleasantly dry. Autumn light filters beautifully through the live oaks, and outdoor activities - kayaking, fishing, hiking - are back in full swing. It’s one of the most rewarding months to enjoy the area’s natural balance of land and water.

November

Mild and peaceful, November marks the start of manatee season once more. The first groups return to the warmer spring waters, and the region settles into its gentle rhythm. With low humidity and long, golden afternoons, it’s a superb time for exploring without the summer heat.

December

Crystal River glows quietly in the winter sun. Manatees gather in large numbers, and the cool air feels refreshing rather than cold. Highs hover near 20°C, perfect for eco-tours and waterfront walks. The festive season feels unhurried here - a blend of nature, calm, and coastal warmth.
