When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter dominates much of Canada, with temperatures ranging from –15°C in northern regions to 0°C in southern cities like Toronto. Snow blankets landscapes from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast. It’s a prime time for skiing, snowshoeing, and winter festivals, while urban centres offer indoor cultural attractions and museums to escape the cold.

February

Temperatures remain low, typically –12°C to 2°C depending on the region. Ice sports, such as skating on frozen lakes, are at their peak. Northern lights become visible in territories like Yukon and Northwest Territories, offering spectacular natural displays for visitors.

March

Early spring appears gradually, with southern areas warming to 0°C–10°C, though snow remains in many regions. National parks and forests start to emerge from winter dormancy, and urban cultural attractions remain appealing. It’s a quieter period for travel before the spring crowds.

April

Temperatures rise to 5°C–15°C in many southern regions, and snow begins to melt. Parks and gardens begin to bloom, making walking, cycling, and wildlife spotting enjoyable. Spring festivals in cities and small towns provide a cultural backdrop for exploration.

May

Late spring brings milder days, generally 10°C–20°C, with green landscapes and longer daylight hours. It’s an ideal time for hiking, visiting vineyards, or exploring national parks such as Banff National Park. Wildlife becomes more active, particularly in forested and wetland areas.

June

Early summer is warm and settled, typically 15°C–25°C in southern regions. Coastal and inland areas alike are suitable for outdoor adventures, from kayaking and canoeing to hiking and cultural exploration in urban centres. Festivals and events are in full swing.

July

High summer sees temperatures generally 20°C–30°C, with the warmest conditions in southern provinces. National parks, lakes, and coastal regions attract visitors for swimming, boating, and hiking. Cities offer vibrant outdoor markets, music festivals, and cultural events during long, sunny days.

August

Warm, often 20°C–28°C, with occasional humidity in southern and central regions. Coastal areas and mountain trails are particularly inviting. Early mornings and late evenings are best for exploring wildlife-rich landscapes or enjoying cultural walks through cities like Vancouver.

September

Early autumn brings milder temperatures, around 15°C–22°C in southern areas. Fall colours emerge in forests and parks, making this an excellent month for photography and hiking. Vineyards, national parks, and scenic drives provide rewarding experiences as the summer crowds diminish.

October

Autumn deepens with temperatures cooling to 5°C–15°C. Landscapes are vivid with reds, golds, and oranges, particularly in regions such as Ontario and Quebec. Cultural visits, city tours, and national park excursions remain comfortable under crisp skies.

November

Temperatures drop further to around –2°C to 10°C in most inhabited areas. Snow begins to return to many regions, and outdoor activities become winter-focused. Cities offer atmospheric indoor experiences, including museums, galleries, and seasonal markets.

December

Winter takes hold, with temperatures from –15°C in the north to –1°C in southern cities. Snow-covered landscapes dominate much of the country, providing ideal conditions for skiing, winter festivals, and holiday markets.
