When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

The Black Forest is cloaked in snow, drawing winter sports fans to Feldberg and smaller resorts like Todtnauberg. Snowshoeing, tobogganing, and peaceful forest walks are magical amid the silence. Temperatures hover just below freezing - perfect for that classic fairy-tale atmosphere.

February

Still deep in winter, February offers crisp air, snow-covered firs, and the colorful chaos of Fasnet-Swabian-Alemannic Carnival - particularly vivid in towns like Rottweil and Elzach. Expect frosty days, with highs typically around 2-4°C.

March

Snow lingers in higher areas, but lower valleys begin to thaw. Hikes resume in places like Baden-Baden and Triberg, where waterfalls thunder with snowmelt. Trees begin budding by month’s end, and temperatures begin rising, often reaching 9-10°C.

April

Unpredictable, but beautiful. One day could bring sunshine through blooming fruit trees in the Kaiserstuhl region; the next, sleet over Titisee Lake. Still, wildflowers start appearing in open meadows and trails reopen widely across the region.

May

May is a highlight for hikers and cyclists. Trails like the Schluchtensteig and Westweg are in prime condition, with forests lush and green. Spa towns such as Badenweiler or Bad Wildbad are rejuvenating. Expect highs around 18-20°C and longer daylight hours.

June

Early summer is idyllic. Wildflowers peak in open fields, and the lakes - Schluchsee and Titisee - welcome swimmers, kayakers, and sunbathers. Vineyards around Ortenau begin to buzz with activity, and the weather stays reliably warm with highs around 22°C.

July

A superb time to explore everything from castle ruins to high ropes courses. Folk festivals in towns like Gengenbach and Haslach showcase local music, dancing, and plenty of Black Forest cake. With highs in the mid-20s°C, it's one of the warmest months.

August

Summer continues in full swing. The region’s thermal baths, shaded trails, and cool lake dips offer a refreshing counter to warm, sunny days. It's a great time for family travel, especially around Baiersbronn, known for gourmet food and scenic walks.

September

A mellow golden light settles over the forest. Vineyards are busy with the grape harvest, and new wine (Federweißer) appears in village markets. Trails are quieter but still ideal, and warm days - often around 19-21°C - make early autumn a joy.

October

Autumn colours blaze across the hills. Chestnut season peaks, and festivals celebrate the bounty of the land. The Black Forest High Road (Schwarzwaldhochstraße) is spectacular this time of year, winding through glowing orange and red woodlands. Cooler air returns, with highs around 13-14°C.

November

Misty mornings and quiet towns mark the lead-up to winter. It’s a good time for scenic drives, forest walks, or spa escapes. Some higher trails may see early snow. November can be chilly, with highs around 7-9°C and fewer tourists.

December

Christmas markets light up towns like Freiburg, Gengenbach, and Wolfach, offering handcrafted goods and warm spiced wine. Snow dusts rooftops, and festive traditions take centre stage. Ski resorts begin buzzing again, with daytime temperatures typically around 2-3°C.
