Austin

Situated on the stunning Colorado River, Austin is the artistic hub of Texas. With an eccentric alternative streak, Austin is a music-lovers paradise with a staggering 250 venues and a reputation for being the live music capital of the world. Downtown Austin houses the stunning Capitol Building, complete with its whispering gallery, whilst there are also plenty of other historical buildings and galleries to explore within the city. Watersport fans can make waves in the 1930s style bathhouse Eddy Pool, whilst those who like their swimming conditions extra cold, Barton Springs is worth a splash. Alternatively, take the trolley (or ‘dillo’ as it’s known locally) from Congress Avenue to Lady Bird Lake, where you can take a water cycle or a rowing boat and enjoy the tranquil waters of this enchanting city.

When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

The year kicks off with cool, dry air and a calm vibe across the city. This is a great month for hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt or exploring the city’s creative neighbourhoods without the crowds. Occasional cold snaps arrive, but patio dining is still doable on sunny afternoons.

February

Spring teases its arrival. Austin’s food trucks are still humming, and the outdoor mural scene is ideal for exploring with fewer tourists around. Valentine's events and live music pop up throughout the month, often under bright blue skies.

March

South by Southwest takes over the city. Venues, parks, and pop-ups are alive with tech panels, film screenings, and world-class music. Temperatures often rise into the mid-20°Cs, perfect for rooftop cocktails and watching sunset bats fly out from under Congress Avenue Bridge.

April

One of the best months to visit. The city is in bloom, Lady Bird Lake sparkles under paddleboards, and weekend markets overflow with local produce and handmade goods. It’s warm but not yet humid - averaging around 26°C - and the trails and beer gardens buzz with life.

May

Outdoor season hits its stride. Barton Springs Pool becomes a must-visit, and music festivals continue rolling through. It’s a lively time, with temperatures climbing toward 30°C, though evenings remain comfortable for strolls along South Congress or Rainey Street.

June

Summer arrives fast. Expect longer days, climbing humidity, and temperatures regularly hitting the low 30s°C. Locals head to nearby swimming holes like Hamilton Pool or escape to Hill Country vineyards for weekend tastings. Water-based fun becomes essential.

July

Heat defines the month - highs can hover around 35°C. Thankfully, Austin is built for it: live music continues at night, icy margaritas flow freely, and shaded patios offer relief. July 4th celebrations on the lake, complete with fireworks and floating flotillas, are a summer highlight.

August

Still scorching, still buzzing. Early mornings are best for paddleboarding or trail runs, while late nights are made for live shows and breezy rooftop bars. Indoor attractions like the Blanton Museum offer cool breaks from the heat.

September

The temperature starts to shift - just slightly. Highs still linger in the low 30s°C, but there's a new energy in the air. ACL (Austin City Limits) festival build-up begins, and the city feels recharged after the late-summer lull. Local eateries unveil new seasonal menus.

October

A highlight of Austin’s calendar. ACL takes centre stage, drawing visitors and artists from around the globe. Daytime highs often sit around a more comfortable 28°C, ideal for festival-hopping, brewery-hopping, or catching sunset from Mount Bonnell.

November

Warmth lingers, but cooler mornings begin to hint at fall. It’s an ideal time for food lovers, with farmers’ markets in full swing and local chefs turning toward heartier dishes. Outdoor events continue into the evenings, often with fire pits and light jackets.

December

A laid-back month with twinkling lights and seasonal cheer. Temperatures fluctuate, with mild days often around 16-19°C, and the city’s creative spirit shines through festive pop-ups and unique holiday markets. It's a great time to enjoy a quieter, local vibe.
