When to Visit

Below gives you information and a rating of the best time of year to visit.

January

Winter in Arkansas is calm and contemplative. Frosty mornings in the Ozarks give way to cool, bright afternoons, with average highs around 8–10°C. Hiking trails are quiet, mist settles over lakes and rivers, and historic downtowns such as Eureka Springs and Batesville feel especially cosy with cafés, antiques, and art galleries offering shelter from the chill.

February

Cool, crisp days continue, with the first hints of spring emerging in parks and gardens. Temperatures nudge into the low teens°C, ideal for exploring Hot Springs National Park’s bathhouses or scenic drives through rolling farmland. Wildlife viewing is rewarding in the state parks as landscapes are open and peaceful before the greenery returns.

March

Spring takes hold. Dogwoods and redbuds begin to bloom, and waterfalls swell with early-season rains. Highs reach 15–18°C, perfect for hiking around the Buffalo National River, biking the Razorback Greenway, or wandering Little Rock’s River Market District. Festivals and outdoor events start reappearing as the days grow lighter and longer.

April

One of the most beautiful months in The Natural State. Wildflowers carpet the forests, temperatures sit comfortably around 20–22°C, and humidity is low. Scenic byways through the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains are at their best, and it’s a superb time for canoeing, horseback riding, or visiting gardens and arboretums in full bloom.

May

Warm, lush, and vibrant. Highs rise to 25–27°C and lakes come alive with boating, fishing, and paddle sports. State parks buzz with campers and picnickers, and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art pairs perfectly with pleasant evening strolls in Bentonville’s surrounding trails. Occasional spring showers keep everything vivid green.

June

Summer arrives with long sunny days and rising humidity. Temperatures commonly reach 29–31°C. This is lake season in Arkansas: swimming at Lake Ouachita, houseboating on Lake DeGray, and lazy paddles along calm river stretches. Early mornings and evenings are ideal for outdoor adventures, while midday invites cool breaks in caves, museums, or bathhouses.

July

Hot and bright, with highs often in the low to mid-30s°C. Water is your best friend — waterfalls, swimming holes, and shaded creek trails provide refreshing escapes. Fourth of July fireworks light up town squares and lakeshores, and late-evening concerts and festivals offer a lively counterpoint to sun-soaked afternoons.

August

The peak of Southern summer. Heat and humidity linger, and afternoon thunderstorms sometimes roll through. Early hikes to overlooks in Mount Magazine State Park or shaded forest trails in the Ozarks are rewarding, while the heat of the day suits lake cruising, tubing, and cooling off in natural springs. Crowds thin slightly before autumn travel begins.

September

Temperatures begin to ease, settling around 27–29°C early in the month and dropping pleasantly toward autumn. It’s a superb time for scenic drives, farmers’ markets, and late-season river trips. Harvest festivals appear across small towns, and the first hints of fall colour touch the high country ridges.

October

A showstopper month in Arkansas. Brilliant foliage spreads across the Ozarks and Ouachitas, with comfortable highs around 20–23°C. Hiking to overlooks like Whitaker Point (Hawksbill Crag), winding along the Pig Trail Scenic Byway, and exploring small towns during fall festivals are unforgettable experiences. Clear skies make stargazing excellent.

November

Cool, calm, and golden. Temperatures move into the low to mid-teens°C, with lingering fall colour in valleys and along rivers. It’s an inviting time for cabin stays, winery visits, or walking tours in historic towns like Fort Smith and Eureka Springs. Trails are crisp underfoot and crowds are light before winter sets in.

December

Winter returns gently, with highs around 8–12°C and festive lights brightening town squares and mountain villages. Hot Springs offers a warm seasonal retreat in its historic bathhouses, and holiday events take place across the state. Clear, cool days are perfect for scenic overlooks, nature walks, and cosy evenings beside a fireplace in a mountain lodge.
