Vietnam is the perfect place for travellers who are seeking culture, friendly faces and beautiful landscapes. Outside of the more modern cities, it’s unhurried too. You can cruise Halong Bay, cycle both hilly and low-lying landscapes and relax on the glorious beaches by day and walk historical streets of town by night.
There are many contrasts between the cities of Vietnam. If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, head to charming Hoi An. Its Old Town and beguiling riverside are divine. Hue is a great place to spend plenty of time within its citadel walls. Hanoi has plenty of hidden gems – especially surrounding the theme of street food. Vibrant Ho Chi Minh is most modern and ‘international’.
Lao Cai Province boasts the mountains and rice terraces you imagine when you first think of Vietnam. Meanwhile, see Ninh Binh Province for limestone outcrops and temples. Hue’s Perfume River is a lovely way to see the city from another perspective.
Vietnamese cuisine shares many flavours to that of Chinese food. Though you’ll soon realise there’s been some inspiration from other nations in the preparation of dishes in the form of curries and the use of coconut. Pho – a beef noodle soup is a common dish as is grilled clams.
It’s pretty cool navigating the lowlands on a bicycle, though if you’d like to get around faster, hop on a motorbike. With an abundance of waterways, exploring by basket boat or taking a cruise is a must. As a visit to Halong Bay is a given, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself dining and sleeping on the water at some point during your travels.
